At the end of 2016, we said farewell to Brooke our Year 8 student. Unfortunately we have also had to say farewell to Lauren and Caelan who have transferred to other schools.
We wish all those students all the very best for their future schooling and we look forward to hearing all about their learning experiences.
SWIMMING and TRIATHLON TRAINING
We will be swimming and training for the triathlon everyday, please bring appropriate clothing and equipment. If your child is unable to participate on any day or needs a bike, or you have a spare bike please contact the school. We will be training daily for this.  Could all students please ensure they bring suitable gear, including well fitting bike helmet and covered shoes, for running and biking. Students are encouraged to bring their bikes to school for training. They should be parked in the bike shed on arrival at school and may be stored in the PE shed overnight if required. Remember it is the responsibility of the student to make sure these are in the PE shed each night. We would really appreciate hearing from anyone who would like to help with training eg spotting for safety, biking or running with the students, please let us know.
We are organising this Oroua group event for the 10th March. We will need all hands on board for this event, so please note it on your calendar. It will be discussed further at the next ASSA meeting.
Training Day for Oroua Swimming Sports - 24th Feb
This will be held at the Makino Pool in Feilding and we will need transport please. All students - junior and senior, will need to attend this training session which will be held on the 24th Feb. This is to finalise events and to practise events that they will enter into in the Oroua Group of Schools Swimming Sports being held on Friday the 3rd of March.
Oroua Group of Schools Swimming Sports - Friday 3rd March
This event is happening at the Makino Aquatic Centre in Feilding.  There is no bus or postponement date, the weather would need to be really bad for the sports to be cancelled, so please come prepared.  This event is for the whole school, but the juniors will have a programme in the shallow pool.  Entry to the pool is free.  Children will require their togs, 2 towels, goggles, their lunch, a drink, warm clothes, a hat and sunscreen.  Kimbolton will sell food and drink. Students are required to wear their school uniform please.  Cup age groups :- Junior = 8 years and under. Intermediate = 9 and 10 year olds. Senior = 11 years and over.  Parents are asked to arrange transport for their own children on this day. It is a great Oroua day and a chance to see your children’s swimming confidence and ability. There is no stand so parents will have to bring their own seating and shade.
The programme for the seniors should conclude at about 2.00 and juniors earlier. This is a good date to make all those appointments e.g haircuts.
Oroua Schools Triathlon - Friday 10th March
We are organising this Oroua group event. We will need ALL hands on board for this event. Please talk to Louise, Mary or Maryann (Chairperson of ASSA)  if you have any questions. Everyone will be expected to help in some areas, either marshaling or selling food during the day.
Students are required to wear their school uniform for this event please.  Uniforms, students need to run in their green sports top - please talk to Pat if there are any problems with your child's uniform asap please.

The juniors will have a homework notebook which sets this out. Please sign it and add comments as necessary.  Most students will have weekly spelling to learn for their weekly test, juniors on Wednesday and seniors on a Thursday.
STATIONERY
As in past years we bulk buy stationery for the students and supply it to students as required. An account will come out to you about twice a year.  We encourage parents to cover their student's’ books with duraseal as this keeps them looking good throughout the year.
TECHNOLOGY
Year 7 and 8 will attend technology starting on Monday 13th Feb. Students will have to be at school by 8.30 to catch the bus to Kimbolton to catch the technology bus. They return by bus at lunchtime to school.
At technology they must have their hair tied back and wear fully covered shoes.  Unfortunately if they come in sandals or jandals they are unable to participate.  Shoes need to be reasonably sturdy so no canvas shoes please.
Students will require a 1B5 book, which they can get from school  They will also need pens, ruler, pencil case etc.

Blanket Consent Forms
A Blanket Consent form for all EOTC activities held during 2017 will be sent out to students.
Please fill this form in and return it to school as soon as possible.  This form relates to all activities that students participate in outside the classroom i.e Triathlon, Oroua events etc. which are not over night or could contain risks.
ASSA - Barbeque Welcome back for all school families, community and friends.
10th February, from 5pm at school
Bring your salad / dessert and ASSA will provide meat. Let’s kick the year off and have some fun… activities for kids and adults!
It is important that all families are represented and contribute. If you need help with babysitting please let us know asap. All school families are members of ASSA which is the Apiti School Support Association.
We are lucky to have vast strengths within our school community group and we appreciate the sharing of these. Be it time, expertise, cooking, setting up and manning stations, providing materials ... the list goes on. At Apiti we do not have a "donation" like most schools. Nor do we charge students for education outside the classroom as most other schools do. We believe it is the right of all students to participate in all learning inside and outside the classroom and have many opportunities to use ICT. ASSA makes and donates at least $8000 to the BOT each year to enable these learning opportunities for your children and to provide extras such as our new school uniforms. We rely on 3 - 4 big fundraisers for funds to cover these costs.
We appreciate the support of all families and the community, and look forward to seeing you at the Welcome Back BBQ.  Reminder the show is on the 25th Feb and the Triathlon is on 10th March.
16th - 25th June - Possum Hunt.  7th July - Mid Winter Christmas Get Together.  19th October - Lamb and Calf Day.  -  Maryann Pratt - ASSA Chairperson.

Complaints and Concerns procedure
We value feedback about your community school both positive and suggestions on how we can improve.
As this is the first newsletter of the year, the BOT have asked we include this for your information as we are reviewing this policy.  We appreciate your feedback.
Policy 3:2 : Complaints and Concerns Policy
Rationale
It is in the best interests of all concerned that issues arising in the school are addressed as early as possible. This policy is designed to ensure that concerns and complaints are resolved in a manner that accords fair process for those involved.
Definitions
Concern
These are informal and low level. These should be directed to the teacher concerned in order to reach an early and satisfactory solution.
Eg. I think my child is at a higher level for reading but the teacher always puts her lower.
Complaints
These are formal, addressed to the Board of Trustees in writing, and signed. If a concern has not been resolved satisfactorily, then it may become a complaint.
Concerns and complaints will be addressed according to the processes outlined in the flowcharts attached to this policy.
Guidelines for dealing with concerns and complaints.
Concerns
1.   Open communication between school and parents/caregivers will be maintained by staff, and encouraged from parents/caregivers.
2.   Concerns of the parents in regard to the teaching of their children, their progress, or their behavior must be raised with the child’s teacher. If an appointment is required, this must be made within 1 week of the concern being raised.
3.   Any verbal concerns expressed to a member of the Board of Trustees will be referred directly back to the person concerned.
4.   At all times, the integrity of the teacher and parent must be acknowledged, and concerns will be voiced, listened to, and addressed in a respectful manner.
5.   The education and welfare of the child are paramount at all times, and should remain the focus of any discussion.
6.   If the concern remains unresolved, the concern may be raised with the principal. In the case of the teacher being the principal, then the concern is taken to the chairperson. A meeting between the complainant, the teacher concerned, the Principal, and, if appropriate, the B.O.T. chairperson may be convened. The concern will be recorded, and any agreed follow up action will be checked after a specified time.
7.   The Principal will inform the Board of Trustees chairperson of concerns/complaints that are unable to be resolved satisfactorily, or have potential disciplinary considerations. The requirements of employment contracts and relevant legislation will be complied with.
Complaints (in committee)
8.   In the event of the parent still being unhappy, then the concern becomes a formal complaint, and must be raised in writing, signed, and addressed to the B.O.T. Unsigned or anonymous complaints will be disregarded.
9.   While concerns will be addressed according to the procedures laid out in the concerns flowchart, complainants have the right to refer a complaint directly to the Board of Trustees. The complaint must be in writing and signed by the complainant. All written complaints will be acknowledged as having been received to the complainant. The B.O.T. may refer written complaints to the principal to resolve or investigate. The principal shall report back to the board with recommendations, and also on resolution and action on complaints.
10. There may be occasions when it is appropriate that the board or sub-committee of the board assumes the role of the principal, as in complaints against the principal.
11.  All participants to the action of a complaint are to maintain confidentiality of the information and documents.
12. Action will be based on STA. guidelines, complaint flowchart. In the event of action involving non teaching staff, the general principles embodied in the N.Z.E.I. guidelines will apply, but the specific provisions of the employee's’ current industrial award will be paramount.
13.  Board members with a conflict of interest should exclude themselves from participating in the complaints procedure.
14.  Where a complaint may have a potential disciplinary consequence for an employee that person should be advised of his/her rights to representation.
15.  The Board of Trustees or complainant, if appropriate, may seek professional advice from N.Z.S.T.A., M.O.E., N.Z.E.I., E.R.O., and other relevant sources.
16.  Insurance for claims resulting from complaints shall be budgeted for by the B.O.T., and the agent concerned notified as soon as the Board is aware of a disciplinary procedure.
