Welcome
We are delighted to welcome Fisher and Phinece, along with their parents Michael and Toni and their family to our school.  Fisher is a Year 5 boy and Phinece is a Year 3 girl.  We know Fisher and Phinece will enjoy learning and getting to know all the other students at Apiti School and we know the community will make the family feel very welcome.

Friday Closing Time
School will return to 3.00pm finishing time every Friday during term 4.

Ski Trip
Well we had another amazing day on the ski slopes of Mt Ruapehu, the weather was sunny and warm, so we chose the date well.  The students rose to the challenges, and showed fantastic commitment, for some it was their first skiing experience and for others a chance to improve their snow skills.
Thank you to all those parents who took transport and supported the students and helped make this a really successful learning experience.
Unfortunately, we did not get the message about the cards that are in use for the first time this year, and we received an email from Turoa (Courtney) as attached :
Sorry but I didn’t seem to get all the lift pass cards back that I had issued for your visit on the 24th. I have only received 4 back out of the 36. As I did advise, any lost cards will incur a $5.00 fee so if I cannot get these cards back then I will have to charge the School for the unreturned cards. I hope you had a great visit to Turoa recently.  Kind regards,  Courtney YoungSchools and Groups Co-Ordinator- Turoa.

This is a new policy by Turoa, so please return these cards to school as soon as possible, so we can send them off so we will not be charged the extra $5.00 per card. Thanks very much.

Oroua Basketball Festival
Thank you to those parents who helped out with transport to this festival at the end of term 3.  The students enjoyed the day, competed well and as always did our school proud.

Library Opening
It was fantastic to see all our students dressed up as one of their favorite book characters, there were some pretty amazing costumes and it was great so many parents entered into the spirit as well. Thank you for supplying the shared lunches. Well done to the Community Creators for leading this exciting day. We hope everyone enjoyed reading about this day in the October 2nd Feilding Herald.

Digi Awards
Our entries into the Digi Awards were also showcased on the Library opening day.  The movies, mini documentaries and music videos were of a much higher level this year, as the students developed skills especially over the last 3 years. The students put their vision into reality, using both apple and PC. These can be viewed from the students wiki e-portfolios pages. Contact the school if you would like a link to view them. We all appreciated the help they received from home, and support from our IT advisers.
The list of finalists has now been announced on the Manawatu Digi Award site. We are very excited to report that we have the following entries in the Mini Documentary section finalists :- Year 4 - 6 = 'History of Sheep' by David.  'Motorbike Safety' by Dylan, Tyler and Derek. Year 7 - 8 = 'Learn for Life' by Zahn, Huntah, Hannah, Travis and Nikki.  In the Music section, Year 7 - 8, we have 'Bully to Me' by Hannah.  Congratulations to all those students.

Mrs Fielders Trip to Korea
On behalf of the Apiti School staff, Board of Trustees and students, we congratulate Nicki on being selected to travel to Korea for a Korean Studies Workshop with 10 other teachers from around N.Z during the school holidays.  This trip included a programme of lectures, school and site visits and Nicki is developing a unit of work based on her experiences for all teachers to use.
We are delighted to report that Nicki had a fabulous time but an extremely full and busy time and is looking forward to sharing her learning with our students which will be of huge benefit to our school.

Athletics Training
We will start weekly athletic coaching lessons with a Sport Manawatu coach on Tuesday the 14th of October (tomorrow) and will continue every Tuesday for the next few weeks. Students will need to come prepared with suitable clothing e.g shorts, or tights.

Sun Policy
We suggest all students have sunhats and we think it is important that all take responsibility for their own sun safe practices. There is some sun block at school, please talk to your children about your feelings about this, and their needs. We do remind them but families do vary about this.

Lamb and Calf Day - Thursday 23rd October
Lamb and Calf Day provides a great opportunity for our school to showcase student learning and celebrate success. This open day is a meaningful opportunity to present and showcase work from many areas of the curriculum, in a variety of formats.
This day consists of three parts : Indoor section in the morning, Outdoor section in the afternoon and Whanau Group section.

Programme
Students arrive at school with required items to complete their Miniature Scene, a Vegetable / Fruit Sculpture and finishing their own Flag creation. These have been chosen by the students after a brainstorm and vote today.
We will be completing the flag the day before so all students should have the things they need for it. A pole, string and some suggestions include material, feathers, wool, beads, etc.  Any sewing can be done at home, if your child is too young to use a sewing machine, parents could help with this.
Each whanau group will be selling something on this day so please bring some money if you would like to purchase these. More about this soon.

9.00 - 10.15 :   Students complete Learning Tasks (Junior/Intermediate/Senior)
10.30 - 11.00 : Morning Tea.
11.00 - 12.00 : Judging of Indoor Individual Exhibits
Students complete Whanau Group Learning Tasks.
12.00 - 1.00  :  Shared Lunch.
Calves / Lambs to arrive before 12.45.
1.00   :  Judging of Lambs commences (Junior/Intermediate/Senior/Playcentre).
             Judging of Calves commences (Senior/Junior)

At the completion of outside judging, the indoor exhibits will be open for viewing.
The Native area can be viewed at any time through-out the day.
This will be followed by Prize-giving and afternoon tea.

We welcome families, friends, neighbours and all community members to our school for this day from 12 noon. The day will run wet or fine.
We would encourage all students to participate on this day by bringing along a lamb or a calf.  We suggest that lambs and calves are born on or between 1/07/14 and 25/09/14.
We understand that there are occasions when a student may not be able to bring a lamb or calf.  To enable everyone to participate, we encourage the sharing/offers of a borrowed lamb.  Judges will be made aware should this occur.
Lambs are judged on Leading, Calling, and Rearing.  Calves are judged on Leading, Walking without a lead and Care and Attention.
Pre-school children are welcome to bring their lamb – their section will be after the school lambs.  They are also welcome to join us for the fun events. Pre-schoolers will receive a participation certificate.
Fun events will be held while points are being added up, for ‘best dressed lamb and calf’ and a ‘drinking competition’ if you would like to bring 200mls for your lamb and 2 litres for your calf.
Please do not wash your lamb, just give it a light brush regularly.  You may wash your calf, but make sure you do this on a warm day, rinse all soap out of its coat and rub it dry with a towel.  Practice leading your pet every day so that it becomes used to walking beside you rather than you pulling it along, regularly check that its collar isn't too tight and don't forget to take it off when your pet gets bigger.
Please email the school as soon as possible indicating who is bringing a lamb or a calf and the name of the animal.
Cups / Trophies
Could all of last year’s cup winners return your cups to school, all polished up, as soon as possible please.  Engraving will be paid for by the school.
Shared Lunch / Afternoon Tea
ASSA organises the shared lunch for the day which may include meat, salad or vege dishes e.g quiche, bacon and egg pies / sausage rolls etc.  We would like to invite all families, community members and friends to join the judges for a shared lunch at 12.00, before the lamb and calf section starts.  Could all school families please bring along a plate for afternoon tea.  We appreciate all families helping on the day with planning, providing and cleaning up.

We are running a grocery raffle on the day, so could each family please provide 3 non-perishable items to contribute to this raffle.  These items can be dropped into the school staff room any time before Thursday the 23rd please - thank you!  Tickets will be available through-out the day.
We look forward to seeing you all here on the day!

Healthy Lunches
The Bon Apiti committee will start the Healthy Lunches again on Tuesday the 28th of October, with 'Wraps' which will include lettuce, silverbeet, tomato, carrot, bacon, mince, mayo at $3.00 each.  Jucies will cost $1.50 each. Please send your order/money in a sealed, named envelope.  Any donation of any of the above ingredients will be very much appreciated.

Swimming Lessons
Once again we will give our students intensive swimming lessons at the Makino Pool in Feilding prior to the summer swimming and river fun!  The dates are Friday the 31st October, 7th, 14th, 21st November and the 12th of December.  The Board has very generously agreed to subsidise these lessons by paying half, parents are expected to pay the other half please.  It would be great if every family could help out with transport for these lessons.

We are going to Kuratau.  Queen size bed here I come.  "Do I have to look after Charlotte tonight in bed, she even had me to take her to the toilet."  "It is so (in a depressed voice) hot today, can we go for a swim in the lake."  My Dad says Charlotte and I are noodle brains.  On Saturday it was the race of round Rotten Rua.
