Parent ski notice 19.08.13

Parent Notice 19/08/2013
As part of our education outside the classroom programme, we believe that students should be exposed to a variety of learning experiences, and also to provide opportunities for enjoyment, adventure and challenge.
One of the outcomes we seek, is that students develop knowledge and understanding of safe practices in the outdoors and also participate in outdoor activities which can benefit personal health and fitness.  We also aim to make them aware of environmental issues especially when their physical safety is a factor.
We are pleased to once again provide an opportunity for students at our school to learn to, or improve their ski or snowboard skills.  This is one of the many benefits of a small school.
We have a proposed date of Wednesday the 18th of September, weather permitting, or on the 19th or 25th of September.  No other postponement dates will be organised.
the weather is a major factor, so we will check the forecast carefully the days before, as well as the morning of the trip as we will not go if the weather is at all doubtful - it's just not worth it.  Sorry sometimes it's short notice, but that's the nature of snow activities.
Please find attached, a form describing what is available and the price.  then fill in the other attached forms stating what and who is taking what activity e.g Discover Package, Explorer Package, Lift passes etc and then the form regarding your height, weight etc if you are needing to hire equipment.  Please fill out details of all family members attending and return the form back to us before Monday the 2nd of September.
the Board of Trustees will generously subsidise $25.00 per Apiti School student.  If you were to go other than with a school group, you would be paying a much larger sum of money.  Costs have increased, so please check carefully.
It is also important for us to have current health and permission forms as well as an indication of adults who will be able to come and help us.  Unless we have attached a health profile, we have your child's on file, but please let us know if there are any changes regarding medical problems, doctor, allergies or emergency contacts and phone numbers which were filled out in your child's health profile for the previous EOTC trips.  Please also make sure that students have any medication that they may require in case of allergies or asthma.  Other members of the community are most welcome to come along, but we do need to know within the next couple of weeks, numbers and the desired activity, as we need to send all relevant details to the mountain in the near future to confirm out booking.  If you know of anyone interested, please ring the school and we will get the relevant forms to them to fill out so they can see what is available, the price etc.
Accounts will be sent home regarding payment.  Part payments are also welcome before or after the day.
We would appreciate payment straight after the day, as the school organises a credit application.
Anyone is able to upgrade on the day, so if you feel this is a possibility, please make sure you have a little extra money with you.
Please make sure your children have a really good packed lunch for the day, including drink and high energy snacks.  There is food available up there, but it is very expensive. there is free water available on the mountain.
Time :- You will need to leave home at about 6.15am as we will meet at Ohakune at 7.45.  We will gather at the Information Centre / Public Rest room area on the left hand side as you drive into Ohakune.  We would like students to have a substantial morning tea in the park and then we will make our way up the mountain just before 8am.
We are unable to give you a drop back home time, as it will totally depend on the weather.  It he weather packs up we will be home sooner rather than later, but if it stays lovely, we will stay until 4pm when the mountain closes.  If your child travels with another driver, please contact that driver to make pick up and drop off arrangements.
It is suggested that everyone wears named gumboots from the car-park to the equipment hire place.
Please make sure that your children have good quality warm/wet weather gear (named and phone No.) available to put on.  Suggested equipment for the day :-

Waterproof jacket and pants.  Warm layers of clothing to account for changeable conditions.
Warm, waterproof gloves or mittens.             Thick warm socks.       Warm headwear (e.g beanie).
Goggles and/or sunglasses with full UV protection.                          Sturdy footwear.
Sunscreen for exposed skin and lips – minimum factor 15+, re-apply sunscreen regularly.
Plenty of energy snacks and fluids.
