Term Dates:-
Term 2 :  6th May - 12th July.  Term 3 : 29th July - 27th Sept.  Term 4 : 14th Oct - 20th Dec.

Welcome
The staff, students and Board of Trustees would like to welcome Mrs Helen Kinsey-Wightman, the Rangiwahia School principal, to our school for the next two weeks.  Helen will be teaching in the senior room, while Mrs Minnaar will be teaching in the junior room.  We hope Helen enjoys her time here with us.
We would also like to welcome Nicki who has joined us from Rangiwahia School as a year 6 student.  We know Nicki will enjoy learning at our school.

Oroua Group of Schools Cross Country - Friday 28th June.
It was great the call was made Thursday afternoon to postpone this event. It would have been just terrible for the children to stand around waiting in and running in and for the spectators who went along to support the students.  The cross country will now be held this Friday the 28th of June at Waituna West School.  All students are expected to take part in this event.
Please read all relevant information sent home last Wednesday regarding times, appropriate clothing etc.
We ask that all parents be prepared to be a marshall on the course at some stage during the day, please.
A reminder that parents are required to make their own transport arrangements please and that the bus will not run at all on this day.
Students will continue to train this week so they must come to school prepared for training. This means correct shoes to run in.

Oroua Group of Schools Tennis Tournament - Wednesday 3rd July (PP date: Wed 10th July)
Venue:  Feilding Tennis Club
Morning tournament: Year 4-6       9.15-11.15    (Arrive 9am to allow time for set up)
Afternoon tournament: Year 7-8    12.00-2.00     (Arrive 11.45)

NB there is flexibility for very good year 6 players to join the afternoon session.  There will be 17 courts – with 4 children on a court at any time we would ideally like max 68 chn in the morning and max 68 in the afternoon.  Some schools will have all children attending, others will make it optional.

Format for the sessions:
1)  Doubles tournament – 4 children per court.  The winners of each game will move up the court – after 40
mins of play we will announce the winning pair.
2) Singles tournament (4 chn per court) – playing on half the court divided vertically - 40 mins
3) The session will wrap up with some fun games.
Bring: Children need a racquet of the right size if you have them.  We will have about 40 spares.
Students will also need to wear suitable shoes to play in.
We would like each child to bring along a gold coin donation please which will go to Feilding Tennis Club for use of their courts.
We will need transport to and from Feilding to this tournament next Wednesday, so please fill in the attached transport slip and return it to school as soon as possible.

Music
Jo will continue to take students for music lessons every Monday and has requested that those students who are learning music and / or an instrument must bring them along to school every Monday please.  Practicing your music and your instrument at home would be very beneficial.  Jo will also be taking choir and dance lessons at school every Monday.
Jo Eastwood will be back next term, every Thursday from 10 - 10.30am to take ukulele and guitar group lessons for those interested at a cost of $30.00 a term (an amazing price)!!.  Please let the school know if your child is interested in having these lessons.

School Hours
At the recent Board meeting, the Board discussed the options of changes to our school hours and after considerable discussion, it was decided to keep the hours as they are, i.e continue to 3pm except Fridays at 2.30pm for terms 2 and 3.

Bon Apiti
Healthy lunches will continue as they have over the past couple of months. The options include wedges, sausages on toast with baked beans.

Potatoes
These are all sold out, thanks so much to everyone who bought a bag from us and once again we would like to thank the Corbetts for their very generous donation of several bags of potatoes, it was very much appreciated. Anybody who still needs to pay could you please do so as soon as possible. Thanks.

Thank You
We wish to thank you for allowing the Palmerston North Caravan Club to have their June rally at your school.
What a wonderful school!!!
On Saturday, we all went to 'Mageo's' place to view the crafts and walk around their garden.  Some of the men then visited the cars at Murray's place, which they were all buzzing about.
To top the day off, we went for a fabulous meal at the Tavern where we all enjoyed the nice warm fire and delicious food.
Thank you once again for having us, we had a great weekend.
  -  Jude from the P.N. Caravan Club.
$150 was received from the caravan club for the use of our facilities and has been deposited into the schools bank account.

HFMD Illness
Apiti Playcentre feel the need to inform all parents that there is an outbreak of 'Hand, Foot and Mouth' (HFMD) circulating through the centre.
What is it?
Hand, foot, and mouth disease is a common viral illness of infants and children. Viruses from the group called Enteroviruses cause HFMD. HFMD is often confused with foot-and-mouth disease of cattle, sheep, and pigs. Although the names are similar, the two diseases are not related at all and are caused by different viruses.
Individual cases and outbreaks of HFMD occur worldwide, more frequently in summer and early autumn.
HFMD is not a notifiable disease under the Health Act 1956 however Public Health may get involved if there is an outbreak of HFMD in the community or in an institutional setting, e.g. a childcare centre or rest home.
How does a person become infected?
Infection is spread from person to person by direct contact with discharges from the nose and throat, or the blisters of infected persons. HFMD is not transmitted to or from pets or other animals.
HFMD usually occurs in children under 10 years old but may also occur in adults. Everyone is at risk of infection but most people who become infected do not get sick.
What are the signs and symptoms?
Symptoms appear about 3 to 7 days after been infected and last for 7 to 10 days. The illness has a sudden onset with;
Mild fever (often the first symptom of HFMD) poor appetite, feeling unwell, sore throat, followed by spots in the mouth, mouth sores/ulcers, spots on hands, feet, bottom and legs. tiredness and irritability.
Fever begins 1-2 days before sores develop in the mouth beginning as small red spots that blister and may form ulcers. These are usually located on the tongue, gums and inside of the cheeks. Spots are small and red, similar to chickenpox, but don’t itch.
How bad is it?
The illness is usually not serious. Nearly all cases recover without medical treatment in 7 to 10 days. Complications are unknown but rarely a patient may also develop mild viral meningitis in which the patient has fever, headache, stiff neck and back pain and may require hospitalisation.
For diagnosis, treatment and advice, you will need to see your doctor to rule out other causes for the rash.
Treatment
Give soft, easy to eat food, and plenty of fluids. Rest. Paracetamol or pamol can be used for pain relief.
Will I need time off school, childcare or work?
Anyone who has the infection should be kept away from other children. It is best to keep the child home from school/pre-school especially while they feel unwell and until the blisters have dried.
How do I avoid the illness?
Adhering to good personal hygiene can help to reduce your chances of becoming infected:
Always wash and dry your hands thoroughly:
After going to the toilet.  After changing children’s nappies.   After nursing or coming into contact with a patient with HFMD
Immediately remove and wash contaminated clothing and linen, using hot water and laundry detergent.
Do not share spit, food, drink containers, or lip balm, etc.
For further information please contact:
MidCentral Public Health Service - Palmerston North: (06) 350 9110.
If your child has any symptoms, please keep him / her at home and contact the school immediately.
