Virtual Learning Network
Some senior students have elected to enrich their learning through our Virtual learning environment. Students are learning french, spanish or astronomy. This is an hour lesson each week with a class made up of students from around New Zealand. Students are also expected to practice their new learning and teach other senior students in our timetabled slot. Teaching others allows us all to learn and consolidates and reinforces learning.

Whanau Group Reports
Daily, we see the powerful effect of student led, authentic learning opportunities. This term we welcome Anwyl Minnaar to our staff, whose strengths in this area are immense!! She will work with groups of students within our teaching and learning programme.
Students have looked at the strengths and interests of their whanau groups and new 'on-going action projects' have been embraced. All groups, except the Herbalists (who have a new action project to 'dig their teeth into') have met with Anwyl and I to look at what has been achieved to date and plan (long term and next step). Each group has personalised their action project, giving their role a new name.  Please ask your child about their new action projects and their goals ... Nicki
Waste Busters (ex Recyclers)
Tip of the week:
Please ... No more gladwrap in lunch boxes. This is because it does not break down ... it just destroys our environment!
Instead ... Why don't you use little reusable containers or bags for food. They can be taken home in our lunchboxes and filled with something new for the next day!!
Expert Plantagators (ex Plant Experts)
On Tuesday we are putting shelves in the shade house and laying gravel along the bottom.
If anyone would be kind enough to come down and help us with that we will be real thankful.
Hydro Rangers (ex Hydroponic Experts)
In the next couple of weeks we are going in be planting veges and fruit and we are going to keep cutting all of the dead bits of the plants to keep the bugs away.
We are hoping to learn from the past Hydroponic experts and Mr Sandford. We will be able to do more as it warms up!
Community Creators (ex Herbalists)
We are now no longer the 'Hydroponics Experts.' We are thinking we will be called the 'Community Creators'.
We are now in charge of creating a relaxing learning space for everyone in our school. This will include finishing off the Treemendous space out side the office and making the library a cool relaxing place eg putting in couches and moving the tv and getting new books. We will be planning with Mrs Minnaar and Mrs Fielder tomorrow.
Supa Small Blacks (ex Sport Stars)
We are looking at updating our PE gear. If anyone has any ideas about what sort of gear we should get, we would love to hear from you so we can get the best gear for the school!

Bon Apiti
For healthy lunches for the first half of this term we are serving Nachos.  They are $2.00 a plate.  These will be available each Tuesday and Thursday.  If anyone could help out with donations of cheese,  corn chips or nacho flavouring, this would be very much appreciated.
We would like to say thanks to June for helping us make the mince up for the nachos. It was very good of June to donate her time to us. It was kind of her.

What's ahead...
Mathex
Senior students are currently working on improving their problem solving skills. A group will be selected to make a combined Mathex team (Year 5 and Year 6) with students from Rangiwahia school. These students will bring maths problems home to solve with you. The aim is to generate discussion. They are certainly not easy and are aimed to challenge students and to practise and consolidate problem solving strategies and math discussion. Students will share their solutions and the way they achieved these together the following day.  The Mathex day is on the 10th of August.

Hockey
Senior students will be developing their skills over the next five weeks in preparation for the Oroua Hockey tournament on the 14th of September (p.p. 21Sept).  Students will need a mouth guard as soon as possible please and if they have any shin pads, these would be good as well.  Thanks to Kate and Tanya for their offer to help with coaching.

Safe and Creative
This week we will be consolidating our learning; First aid, road and cycle safety. It was great to see all students so well organised with their bikes on Friday. We all learnt a lot and realized the skills necessary to have control on your bike in other environments e.g.town. If time and weather permits we will plan in more practice of this.
This Friday our focus is farm safety.
Do you know how to put someone in the recovery position ... Ask your child to show you.

Water and School drinks
All students are expected to bring a named water bottle to school. It can be filled with water from home, the cooking room or classroom sinks.
Chess
Students and parents of our school have been invited to the preview of this show to be held at the Regent on the 15th or 16th of August TBC. The show stars AJ; our ICT guru (a man of many talents!) Thanks Maryann for arranging this!!! What an opportunity. Please let Maryann know, before this Friday, if you would like to attend the preview.
