Sharing our Learning
Life Education
This Friday Harold and Leone from the Life Education bus will be working with us at Apiti. Rangiwahia school students will also be learning with us for the day.

Chess
It has been great to see the enthusiasm senior students have shown. Many are learning chess for the first time and are learning new strategies and combinations, along with the games rules! The Kimbolton Chess competition this Friday is hugely oversubscribed. We are therefore unable to join the competition. As many of our students are developing an interest in chess, we will continue to provide opportunities and will timetable a local competition in term three. Polease let us know if you want to join us for a chess competition ?

Cross Country - Friday 15th June
It is great to see all students prepared and focused this year, and dedicated to training for the cross country!! All students have set themselves goals and an action plan.. Most students are well prepared everyday even though some are fighting off the flu. The fitness programme is long distance running and we believe the students will be well prepared for the event on Friday the 15th of June at Waituna West School (postponement date: 22nd June).
Students will need to be at Waituna West School by 10.00am please.  All children (with adults) will walk the course starting at 10.15, guides will walk the course with each age group.
Welcome at 10.45.  Races will start at 11.00 am.  Boys and girls will run together but results will be recorded separately.
11.00 - 7 year old race.          11.15 - 8 year old race.          11.30 - 5 year old race.
11.45 - 6 year old race.          12.00 - 9 year old race.          12.15 - 10 year old race.
12.30 - 11 year old race.         12.45 - 12+ year old race.
The 11 and 12 year olds run about 3.5kms.
Children run in the age group that they are on the day.  Certificates will be awarded after each race.
The course may be muddy and there will be some water to negotiate for the older children, so please make sure students take a change of footwear and clothes as they may get wet and dirty.
The course is similar to previous years, however the Native area has grown significantly and now obstructs views of some of the course.  Parents are able to watch their children from positions on the course as long as you keep off the track and out of the way of competitors.
Students will need to take warm clothing, their lunch, a water bottle and suitable footwear for running in.  Students will need to wear their school sports uniforms please.
Parents are required to transport their own children to this event please, however if you have difficulty with this, please let Mary or Nicki know as soon as possible.  If parents do not stay to support the runners, please make sure you return in time for pick up at 1.30pm.  The school bus will not run at all on this day.
There will be sausages, bacon rolls, drinks, tea, coffee and baking for sale throughout the day.
The phone tree will operate if this day is postponed.

Board of Trustee Meeting
The next Board of Trustee meeting will be held on Monday the 18th of June in the staff room, starting at 7.00p.m.  All members of the public are welcome to attend.  Please remember to view the agenda prior to the meeting, on our Board tab at the top of the newsletter.

Annual Production
All students are currently rehearsing their part in our annual production. This includes acting, dance, singing, costume, set and prop development. All of the key competencies are challenged and therefore developed further in this learning environment. Self and time management, managing change and relating to others are particularly focused through learning at this time of the year. Many students are wanting to practice at home. This is the link through our wiki:- http://apitischoolwiki.wikispaces.com/Production. Although we are sourcing most things from school we hope all parents know what their child needs to wear, or if you have some of these items, and can share them with others, please contact the school eg humming fish - white shirts and black pants, jackets and sun glasses. Barbaloots, we are making bear head gear, but brown bear like clothes brown gloves brown socks with claws, which will be worn over the feet. Swanny swans , we are making glittery tops/tunics but they will need shortish shorts, singlet tops, and bright wigs. The Thneed family will need green clothing. We are making truffula trees (we need a large dye pot) and are making buildings and cars.  We also need some large knitting  needles and half knitted large items like jerseys especially in bright colours.

Home School Collaboration
Parent Meeting
As part of our annual plan to address the target ; - home / school collaboration, we organised another meeting, after a session with Brian Coles, our adviser and appraiser. This meeting was requested, and focussed on our literacy programme and our curriculum. It was great to see almost all families represented. Thank you for your support and interest in how we can work together to maximize your child's learning and progress. It does make a huge positive difference. If you would like to discuss anything further please just make a time with your child's teacher.
The results of the survey were very affirming and we were very pleased to see parents at our school are well informed. The results showed that we all value the importance of literacy and learning and thinking skills. In the area of the curriculum you can support at home, personal interest was listed as most important. The students stickers valued the arts and physical education at school.

Documentaries
Senior students are beginning their documentaries based on their speeches or an aspect of road safety. Students will be sourcing photos, music and video clips that illustrate the points in their speech. Documentaries will be created using moviemaker software. This will need to be done both at home and at school. We would appreciate it if you could discuss this with your children.
This visual and oral language focus works alongside our production planning and rehearsals.
The juniors will be further developing their documentaries on learning how to learn, which was also started during speeches.

Thank you to:-
Mary Loveridge and George and Mavis Carter for donating chess boards to the school for our students to practice their chess skills on.
Thank you for letting us use your Chess boards.  We all like to play chess every day to get better and we like to play against the computer which also helps us to get better. - By Jack.
Russell and Nipper for delivering the stage, and especially Russell for erecting the stage in the senior room for our students to practice on for our upcoming production.
Murray Whitehead for carrying out urgent repairs to our lawnmower - this saves us so much time organising getting the mower into town and back again!
Duncan and Denise Neilson for supplying us with Native plant seedlings for our native area and our growing unit.
The staff and students appreciate your support of our school very much indeed.

Hot House Tender
The tenders for our Hot House which we won at the Manfield Garden Festival, are due to close this Friday the 8th of June.  This hot house is approximately 2 x 1 1/2 metres and is well insulated against heavy frosts, come and see it and especailly how well the grass is growing in it. - it would be a great asset to have, especially up here in the high country!!
Please make sure to get your tender in to the school office no later than 2.30pm this Friday.  The higest tender will be accepted.

Thought of the week !
There are five things that you cannot recover in life:
(1)  The Stone....after it's thrown.
(2)  The Word....after it's said.
(3)  The Occasion....after it's missed.
(4)  The Time....after it's gone, and
(5)  A person....after they die.
