Sharing our Learning
School Speeches
Listening and speaking are essential for language development, for learning, for relating to others, and for living successfully in society.  Students should learn to express their own ideas, feelings, and thoughts clearly, and respond to others appropriately, in a range of formal and informal situations.
Students need structured, planned experiences in order to develop the listening and speaking skills that they will use in adult life.  They should understand the processes by which they acquire these skills, think critically about what they hear, and use oral language to gather, process, and present information.  They should recognise the ways in which oral language varies according to context, understanding the structures and conventions of different oral language texts, and develop the knowledge and strategies for analysing spoken language, using real examples.
The Junior room Oral Language programme is as follows:
Monday - What you did at the weekend? For recount in story writing. .
Tuesday - Bring your favourite book to share.
Wednesday - Singing, musical beats and rhymes.
Thursday - Talk about family and friends and pets with a partner (the partner report ).
Friday - Poetry - Read poems and learn a new one each week.
The Senior room Oral Language programme is as follows:
Monday - What's on top (this is a brainstorm leading into weekly recounts).
Tuesday to Friday - Oral sharing reflection and feedback specific to current learning.
Thanks to all families for the support you gave your students as they wrote and presented their speeches. It is a great skill for life to develop. Thank you very much to Mary Burton for judging our school competition.
Congratulations to:-
1st - Tom / Cole
2nd - Huntah / Hannah
3rd - Charlotte / Brooke
Tom and Cole will be representing our school at the Oroua Speech competition on Wednesday. This begins at 1pm. We would like as many senior students as possible to come and support Tom and Cole and listen to Oroua's best!. It is a great learning opportunity. If you are able to help with transport please let Nicki know.

School Professional Development - Parent Workshops
Next Tuesday, the 29th of May, Brian Coles will be spending the day with us as part of our ongoing professional development. Our strategic goal for this year is :- for parents and the learning community to be actively involved in supporting the education of our students.
At our last home/school collaboration meeting, just before our camp meeting, it was suggested by parents that we share our programme in literacy and numeracy. This term we are sharing literacy learning and teaching.  The students will be supplying and serving afternoon tea,  at 1.30 in the staffroom followed by the meeting which will start at 2pm. The students will be helping with the presentation by showing what they learn and how they learn it. This is a strength of our school as the principals from the Small Rural and Sole Charge Schools conference who came up last week noted.
Dear Mary,
Yesterday I was part of the Sole Charge and Rural Principals group who were fortunate to be able to visit your school. Thank you very much for allowing us to visit - I was really impressed with the way in which your students spoke about their learning and achievements in different areas, and the way in which they were an active leading part in it. Congratulations to yourself and your senior teacher in creating this learning environment.
You also very generously handed out excellent resources - the Numeracy Knowledge Matrices, Maths Standards and Written language Matrix.
I greatly appreciate these.
Kind regards,
Jennifer Cochrane
Principal
Waikino School

We were very proud that our school, was chosen by the Conference facilitators (Massey University) as the school they would visit. 30 principals from all over the country came and were very impressed, they took lots of photos of learning and spoke to the students and teachers. They were very interested in our whanau groupings and how the students develop leadership and take responsibility for many areas around the school, therefore having ownership, including reporting to the Board.

Cross Country - Please bring your shorts to school to train for cross country.
-  By Jack (For Sport Stars)

We are beginning chess this week. If you have a spare chess board sitting at home, we would love to borrow it for the next few weeks. Thanks

We would like to ask for some wood and shade cloth to keep creating the shade house. Thanks. - By Charlotte (For the Plant Experts)

Thanks very much to Duncan Neilson for offering us some native seedlings.
-  By Stanley (Plant Experts)

Thank you Mrs Lowe for helping us tidy the recycling shed. It was very messy and with our whanau group we have now got it very tidy.  -  By Hannah (Recyclers)

The Recyclers were wondering if anyone going to the recycling centre could please take a little from school at the same time. Thanks  -  Tom (Recyclers)

Hot House
At the recent Board of Trustee meeting, even though we were delighted to win the glass house, the school does not require two so it was decided to put this one up for tender.  This would be a marvellous place to grow your tomatoes, peppers, lettuces etc all year round as it is made from material that will protect your plants against our heavy frosts.  This glass house is worth $1,500.00 and is small enough to fit on a large trailer or small truck. To view this glass house, please visit our school. The highest tender will be accepted.
Please email or drop in a note stating your offer and contact details by the 8th of June.

Music Lessons
Jo Eastwood will start ukulele / guitar lessons tomorrow (Tuesday 22nd). The cost is $5 for a group lesson and $8 for a private lesson. Please contact us if you would like your child to learn either of these instruments. Cole, Logan H, Logan W-B, Hayley, Lauren, Alex and Ben are booked in so far. The groups will be organised on ability. There are still places available. The lessons will be in the morning every Tuesday and we can fit students in break times or school times, whichever parents prefer. We thank Jo for making herself available.

The Feilding Intermediate principal informed Mary and Nicki that they have been delighted with the attitude of our Year 7 and 8 technicraft students.  Well done.
