Learning in the 21st Century learning environment

It was great to see so many of you at our recent workshops with AJ. Many have shared their learning and I know many students have since shared some of their skills and knowledge with you. As a 21st century learner we are all on a journey together and this is the most powerful tool and attitude we can have. Mary and Nicki also gained a lot from the day further developing their ICT / Web 2.0 skills with AJ. This filter straight through to our classrooms.

Below is the link that AJ showed us in the evening session. I thought you may find useful :

We received an email from AJ last week saying that he thoroughly enjoyed his day out here working with the students, teachers and the parents, and how lucky the students were to be at Apiti School.

Student Led Conference

As teachers passionate about and facilitating your children’s learning, it was incredibly pleasing to see the confidence and competent with which students shared their progress, goals and the steps they will take to continue to improve and strive for excellence. Students all competently shared their growth and were keen to share evidence of this with you. We would like to congratulate them on the excellent responsibility they take for their learning. We appreciate the support parents give their children to allow them to develop the skills and strategies to become independent, competent, lifelong learners.

Published learning is ongoing through their e-portfolios. Remember to download Google

Chrome to access their Record keeping pages.

ICT Student led Conferences

Two of our students, Ethan and Ashleigh, will join other leaders from Feilding Schools to share their ICT learning with others at our area ICT Student led conference this Friday. It is based at Lytton St school. Ashleigh and Ethan will teach others about internet safety and how to develop an Avatar to protect your identity. Nicki will also run a workshop. This Conference is modelled on the Conferences that Mary and Nicki have attended through our ICT contract. Students from each school in our contract, and other schools who are part of ICT contracts in the wider area, have been invited to join us. Eight other students from our school will have the opportunity to join this learning community. These will be our Year 4 - 8 students. School uniform will be required for this day please. They will spend the day attending lessons based on aspects of ICT and will share their learning with us on their return to school. We will need transport for this day, so please email us or phone Nicki with your offer of help.

Cultural Day

This was a really great cultural learning day for all students and teachers. Thank you to everyone who helped out in any way, especially Jock for all his time and energy co-ordinating the wood and the delivery of the wood, Blair & Fiona McCarroll & Mike Malone for donating wood, Neil for helping with the hangi which included a really early start to the day and for also helping out during the day, Kimbolton School for hosting all the Oroua Schools for the day, Sara Wills for teaching weaving to students and to all the parents who helped out with transportation to and from Kimbolton. Also, a huge thank you every family for providing the kumera for the hangi.

Well done to our students - Emma, Caleb K, Caleb J, Asheigh & Hannah for stepping up as leaders and teaching activities to other Oroua School students on the day and it was great to see our students mix so well with the other Oroua students.

To conclude our cultural experience for the year, we will have a day trip to visit a Marae before the end of this term. It is hoped that all students will have the opportunity to visit a Marae during their time at school, as set out in our Treaty of Waitangi Policy.

Student Recounts -

I arrived at Kimbolton School. Then we all walked into the school. I did art about Maui, it was a sun. Then I learnt the Kapa Haka. I made a friend called Logan. He had blonde hair like me. He likes rugby too and he was at art too. - By Ben.

We drove to Kimbolton School and for lunch we had Hangi and it was yummy and for pudding we had a steamed pudding and custard in the hangi. All of the hangi was yummy. Neil woke up at 3am in the morning to put down the Hangi. - By Brooke.

My favourite show was the Fire Show because they put witches in the fire. - By David.

I had a birthday. I went to the pool. - By Alex.

School Speeches / Oral Language

Student took great pride in the development and presentation of their speeches this year. Students took great ownership of their topic and the development of their argument. This was evident with the quality of speeches. Some core conservation issues were highlighted. Congratulations to all students. I look forward to hearing next year’s already! With the horrid bugs going around, there were a couple of students who were away for last Friday’s assembly. They will present their speeches at our next assembly.

Placings were as follows:

1st: Emma

2nd: Tom

3rd: Caleb K

4th: Hannah

Note: Only students from the Senior Room were judged.

Caleb K and Emma will represent us at the Oroua Schools Speech Competition on Wednesday afternoon.

We would like to take as many senior room students as possible to this. It is a fantastic opportunity for our students to listen to the best speakers from our Oroua Group. These are a powerful learning tool for improvement. Please let Nicki know if you are able to take transport. Oldest students and children of parents taking transport will be given the first opportunity.

Conservation - Protecting ourselves and our environment is our learning context . With our Green Gold Reflection and sharing with the National team at the end of this term, we will be looking at our growth and next steps. I am sure your children will share this with you. Conservation will also be the context for Lamb and Calf Day this year.

Blowing Our Own Trumpet

The following are a sample of letters we have recently received :-

Manchester House : Would like to sincerely thank our school and students for the unexpected enjoyment experienced at being entertained by our students to a group of van travellers at a luncheon held recently in the Apiti Tavern, it was very much appreciated. - P. Hahn (Trip Organiser for Manchester House).

Feilding Intermediate School : Would like to thank the school for the wonderful performance at the Feilding Intermediate PTA Wearable Art Night. They really appreciated us giving our time to help ensure the evening was enjoyable to all. They were impressed with the great standard of behaviour of our students and the way they participated as part of the audience. When our students took to the stage the judges commented on the high standard of our garments, the creativity and construction methods. They were also impressed by the way our students moved on the stage to stay in character with their costume, congratulations, they were fabulous and thank us for our support and that it was great to have us participate. - S. True (Teacher Supporting Wearable Arts).

CORE Education Ltd : The commitment to ICT in this school is highlighted by the funding that has gone into ensuring that they are 21stC ready! The students using the tools to on-share their learning with the wider community, applying their own learning to create their own wikis and logging in their learning via their ePortfolios, shows the many avenues that are possible for ICT to enhance learning capability.
