A Participant's view
We learn heaps of different skills on computers. We first went to Gloster and made our own posters. After Glogster we went to Kid pix. Here we made a Pak'n'Save ad using cartoons.
It was awesome! We went to play on the playground. After play, we were off to Voice thread. Voice thread is an awesome site to make comments and download pictures and you can also download videos. We are using this programme at school to download and reflect on our speeches. We had too long at the Voice thread breakout and went into lunchtime! After lunch we went to xtra normal. This was new for us and lots of people are learning to use it to make tell a story. That was the end of our tasks. After that we watched and listened to some students from a Wellington College speak to us. - By Chevelle

Oroua Group of Schools Speech Competition
A huge congratulations to Emma who was placed 3rd at the recent Oroua Speech competition. Both Emma and Caleb K represented Apiti School extremely well with great expression and gestures. They both knew their speeches very well.
Congratulations to Bridget from Kiwitea, who won the speech competition.
Last week it was the Oroua speech competition they were all really good. The exciting bit was that Bridget came 1st, Hannah from Waituna West came 2nd and Emma came 3rd. -

Hydroponics Sharing
At the moment we don't have any tomatoes planted because they were dying due to temperature and irregular nutrient supply. We would like to thank Vaughan for buying us a new pump. We have been using some parsley and spinach in our stuffed potatoes. - By Ashleigh

Keeping Ourselves Safe
Last Tuesday Mrs Hayden came. She read us a story. It was about a girl who had to look for her turkeys that had escaped. Mum told her to take her cousin from out of town. They started going but her cousin climbed over the fence even though her mother told them to go through the gate. The girl followed her cousin. They went down a cliff. Luckily they didn't get hurt. They came to a train track. Then they sounded out a word. It said 'Dynamite' They sounded out 'explo' ... 'explos' ... 'explosives!' So they went and told the police. The police told them they were dangerous. They said, "Lucky we didn't touch it" I learnt not to touch things I don't know about. - By Travis

At the moment we have been learning about internet safety. There is a really good site called Hectors world. It helps us learn all about internet safety. It has lots of good places you can go onto. The web site is http://www.hectorsworld.co.nz/ or you can go onto our home page and go to the bottom and on the side will be a little sign that says 'Internet Safety'. - By Ashleigh
We are learning about internet safety by looking at Hector's World. We can watch videos and play music. You can play games and learn some new songs. Learn how to keep safe on the internet by going to Hector's World! - By Charlotte

Senior Room Homework
Well done to Ashleigh who went the extra mile on our homework based on 'Safety Rules at Home and on the Farm'. This was a great opportunity to explore the relevance of 'Keeping Ourselves Safe' for our students.

Healthy Lunches
Do you rush around on a Monday and Wednesday trying to find something suitable for your child/rens lunches?
Well I have the solution!!
At Apiti school we have healthy lunches
This term we are cooking stuffed potatoes.

Not only are potatoes healthy but they are very filling.
Lately we have been filling them with things like herbs out of our Herb Harden / Glass House and bacon.

So send along a $2 coin in your child/rens lunch box and get a potato!! - By Emma

Plant Experts
We still have 40 Hebes to sell and 20 Kowhai plants. Hebes make good hedges. But if you would like a bush just leave them and prune them to suit. Kowhai grow to around about 5 to 10 metres tall. - By Jacob

Daffodil Day - Cake Making
Daffodil day is a day when people give hope to people who are going though cancer. They give hope by giving money. There are stands with money buckets and lots of daffodils, and people walk by and put some money in the bucket and get given a daffodil to support the cancer society. Our School, with the help of June, thought of making cakes to support the Cancer Society. We made them on Friday the 27th of August. We put them on display and auctioned them at the Tavern. All of the money raised will be donated to the Cancer Society. - By Tom

Blowing Our Own Trumpet
Mary and Nicki were asked to present to a group of Principals, teachers and ICT advisers, last week, by Ange at Lytton Street on our ICT development and especially our wikis and e-portfolios. We had many positive comments sent to us, here is a couple :
Dear Mary
On behalf of the Wairarapa ICT cluster I would like to thank you for coming to share your e portfolio success with us. We were all very impressed with the way in which you have adopted this form of assessment and reporting to parents and what a wonderful tool it is for the children and parents to be able to track progress from year to year. Thank you once again. Regards, Carolyn Rattray. Rob Cameron (Principal Wainuioru School).

The below writing is from Innes reflecting on his visit. Thank you so much for making this group feel welcomed in your wonderful schools!
Evening all - You would all have been basking in some reflective glory had you been sitting around a table at the P Nth RSA yesterday afternoon. I had planned for a debrief - what I hadn't banked on was the spontaneous bubbling of excitement that took over the session. I knew (because I know all of you special people) that they were going to see and share some special experiences and environments but I hadn't quite expected the Wow factor that accumulated as the two days went on. Each of you built so well on to the pattern of the days, even if you individually didn't know it, so that in the end the teachers left with this wonderful cornucopia of options. The debrief, and work following on today has given us the chance to reflect on these and turn some of them into action plans.
To each of you many thanks for sharing your passion, purpose and aspirations, for arranging the visits to teachers clearly engaging in the development of quality learning environments and for encouraging 'my' crew to think deeper and wider. If small steps start a journey you have provided some wonderful guidance. So on behalf of the crew and the many lives they will touch a very special thanks. Please pass on my thanks to those who so willingly shared their learning spaces. All the best, Innes Kennard (ICT Facilitator).

We hope all parents and our wider community have had the chance to look at our wiki.
It is really well worth the time, and we are happy for you to forward it or the link to other interested people. Through web based reporting of our school and the achievements of our students and school we are able to fully celebrate our learning. Our wiki is a highly regarded and used in professional development courses, especially in the areas of ICT, on assessment for learning, managing schools, to teachers, principals, BOT's and the Ministry of Education, even in the recent National Standards workshops. It has been a long journey but we are proud of what our staff and students have achieved in this area , and this could not have been done without the support of the community especially the BOT and ASSA .

That's it for this week, will catch you again in a fortnight.
Regards, Mary, Nicki, Mary B, Pat & Christine.
