Information and Communication Technology - 3rd August
On Tuesday the 3rd of August (tomorrow), we would like to invite parents, high school pupils, grandparents and community members to an IT school information evening starting at 6.00p.m. The focus information of this afternoon / evening, is keeping ourselves and our children safe on the internet, educating us on what is available. Also making the most of web 2 tools and how they can be used to enrich learning and how to access, process and present information. If possible we would like every school and community family to be represented at either the afternoon or evening session.
ICT Workshop - 3.00 - 4.00pm in the Senior Room - This will be a hands on workshop, for those who cannot make it in the evening, where we will explore what is available on the internet, how to acccess information, use web 2.0 tools to enrich and enhance learning and to understand how to use it safely. You are most welcome to bring along your own laptop as AJ will be able to help you with any problems or queries re the internet and web 2 tools - e.g skyping, wikis, blogs, virtual reality sites, Utube etc.
Wine, beer and non-alcoholic drinks as well as nibbles will be served throughout the evening session. We will provide a baby sitter and videos at school to keep children / students entertained. Our special guest presenter for the evening will be Andrew Jamieson (AJ) talking about the Direction of Education in Today’s Learning Environment. As educators, parents and community, we aim to provide opportunities that set our students up to succeed and thrive in the 21st century. You are more than welcome to attend both sessions. We are holding the afternoon session as the evening has clashed with another local fundraising event. The afternoon session will start at 3.00. in the senior room and the evening will start at 6.00pm, also in the senior room. Senior students are also welcome to attend the afternoon session.

Healthy Lunches - This Wednesday, we will be starting healthy lunches again. We will be serving stuffed potatoes with filling - they will cost $2.00 each (if the potato is small we will do two). If anyone has any ingredients to donate, it would be very much appreciated. - Emma.

Cultural Day and Toka Tu Moana Performance - 12th August
On Thursday the 12th of August, our students along with all other Oroua School students, will be attending the Toka Tu Moana show and workshops at Kimbolton School. Apiti School has organised this event.
We will spend the whole day at Kimbolton School. The format for the day:- Powhiri (official welcome), Morning tea, cultural learning activities, hangi for lunch, cultural show (Toku Tu Moana). We are having a hangi so if anyone out there could assist Maia with this, we would really appreciate your help. We require hard wood for the hangi (this will need to be delivered to Maia at Kimbolton School ). We will also require flax for our learning activity, if you can provide some please let us know, as our flax has been used extensively recently for our cultural events. Apiti is providing the kumera for the hangi, so could each school family please provide at least 1 kg of kumera which will be peeled at our school the day before. The students will be doing this in groups on Wed 11th, peelers appreciated. On 12th our students and staff will be taking workshops, teaching others how to make flax flowers and headbands and the stick game "E Papa Waiari" To do this we need a 60 magazines. If you have any unused magazines at home we would appreciate them!! We would like to invite and encourage our parents to join us for the day, so please indicate on the transport slip if you will be attending, as we need this for hangi numbers. We will require transport to and from this event, so please fill out the attached transport form and return it to school as soon as possible. Thank you to those who have already returned their transport slip, but we would really like to hear from everyone else please. For some students and adults, this is an introduction to a Maori powhiri (welcome) and the protocol that goes with this. It is an important part of our cultural experiences as this helps us all feel more comfortable in our cultural environment. If possible, all girls will need to wear a knee length or longer dark coloured skirt (preferably black) as this is correct protocol but they only need to be worn for the powhiri.

Speeches Your child is currently writing a speech based on an aspect of this terms integrated topic; "conservation." Senior room speeches are expected to be about 3 minutes long (some junior room speeches will be shorter) and convince us to take action or of a point of view. These are to be completed both in writing time and for homework. It often helps students if they can discuss their topic with you at home. Thank you for your support with this. We aim to have them all published onto cards by the end of this week so students have time to learn their speeches and practise their presentation skills. All students will share these at our next assembly, with the best of our speakers representing us at the Oroua Speech Competition on Wednesday the 18th of August.

Some of the students would like to share their holiday recounts
Fiji by Ben
We drove to Palmy and went on a plane to Auckland. We saw Nana, Poppa, Aunty Andrea, Uncle Brett, Jake, Emma and Grace.
We got on a big plane and we flew to Fiji.
On the way I watched “Cloudy with a chance of meatballs’. I had some chicken pie and fizzy for lunch. Then we landed . We found our bags and we went to Shangri-la. It was a long way and it was hot. We arrived at the lobby. Our room was 472 we had a card to open the door. I built two sandcastles. Then I went kayaking with Dad. I nearly fell off, we went out to the deep water and we saw the coral. The coral looked sharp, white and hard. It was deep down in the sea. Then I sailed on a yacht. It was cool because it had two boat parts and we sat on bit of trampoline in the middle. Dad moved the sail because if he didn’t move it we wouldn’t get back. We got stuck a bit because we couldn't find enough wind. Wind pushes the sail so the yacht can go. We saw some flying foxes, they are bats and they can fly 30metres. I went snorkelling in the shallow water. I saw some slippery fish, and they can bite but they are only little.
The best part of my trip was the plane. I liked the plane because it had TV . I felt like superman flying through the air.

Oroua Netball - Next week, we will begin to practise for the Oroua Netball tournament happening on Friday the 10th of September. Students in the senior room need to ensure they are prepared for this with sport shoes and shorts or track pants.

Tennis Net - Thank you very much to Chris Tapp who has sown new tape along the top of our tennis net. This had become extremely worn from exposure to the sun and this has given it a new lease of life.

Lost - One pair of olive green Ridge-Line track pants. These pants have been missing since the production so they were obviously picked up by mistake. If you do come across them please return them to school as soon as possible.

McCains Barcodes - Helping Kids Grow - Thank you to all those who are participating in this project. We have received quite a few barcodes but would love many more. Any barcodes from any McCain frozen vegetables and McCain Purely Potato are suitable.

Thank Yous - Thank you to Vaughan for installing the new pump for us, we really appreciated you helping us out.

A huge thank you to, to Malcolm for helping us by filling out the drinking water questionnaire - great to know we have someone reliable to do this for us. A huge thank you also to Alan Bell for donating a TV to the school. This will be used as a learning vehicle and will be extremely useful. Again thank you.
That's it for this week, will catch you again in a fortnight.

Regards, Mary, Nicki, Mary B, Pat & Christine.

ASSA Calf Scheme
Please give some thought to how you can contribute to the school fundraising calf scheme.
This is a worth while project that takes little extra time and effort.
Please offer your services to either rear or graze an animal.
Your support is greatly appreciated.
