Welcome to week 5 of term 3, 2009.
Science Fair
Thank you to all those parents who helped out with transport to this event at Kiwitea. Well done to all our students for presenting very colourful, interesting projects and congratulations to Emma for gaining second place with her entry entitled ‘sticky stuff.’ Emma will represent the Oroua Group at the Manawatu Science Fair in Palmerston North on the last weekend of August.
Stationery Accounts
These accounts were sent home last week, please pay at your earliest convenience. If you did not receive an account, you do not owe anything (or very little). Thank you to those who have already paid.
Jump Jam 13 “At The Movies” workshop
This event is happening this Wednesday the 19th of August from 12.30 to 2.15 at the Linton Camp School Community Hall. We will need transport for this trip, so please fill in the attached transport slip and return it tomorrow so Nicki can arrange transport and notify you. We will probably only need 1 other vehicle that can transport 4 or 5 passengers. We have only been allocated 10 slots in total, so will be taking only 9 senior students to this event and they are : - Karen, Rebecca, Anastaisia, Emma, Caleb K, Jacob, Caleb J, Chevelle & Ashleigh. This is an opportunity for motivated students who are keen to teach others. We will need to leave school no later than 11.a.m.
Parent Interviews
Due to unforeseen circumstances we were unable to hold these last week as previously stated. These will now be held this Thursday the 20th of August. Times have been allocated to most parents, but if you have not been contacted, please ring Mary or Nicki as soon as possible to arrange a suitable time.
Assembly!
Assembly will be held this Friday in the senior room starting at 2.00p.m. Everyone most welcome.
E.O.T.C – Stealing Games
This event is to be held on Monday the 31st of August for the year 3 to 8 students. We will need transport for this trip, so please fill in and return the attached transport slip a.s.a.p. We need to be seated at the Massey University College of Education Auditorium by 9.45. Parents whose children are being transported by another parent, will need to contact the driver to make arrangements for pick up and drop off. Students are asked to wear their sports uniform please.
Mt Ruapehu Ski Trip
As part of our education outside the classroom programme, we believe that students should be exposed to a variety of learning experiences, and also to provide opportunities for enjoyment, adventure and challenge. One of the outcomes we seek is that students develop knowledge and understanding of safe practices in the outdoors and also participate in outdoor activities which can benefit personal health and fitness. We also aim to make them aware of environmental issues especially when their physical safety is a factor.
We are pleased to once again provide an opportunity for students at our school to learn to, or improve, their ski or snowboard skills. This is one of the many benefits of a small school.
We have a proposed date of 1st September, weather permitting, or on the 8th or 9th of September.
The weather is a major factor, so we will check the forecast carefully the days before, as well as the morning of the trip as we will not be going unless the weather is right. Other postponement dates will be organised if needed. The phone tree will operate if required.
Please find attached, a form describing what is available and the price and then fill in the other attached form regarding your height, weight, style e.g. Discover ski, ability etc. Please fill out all details of all family members attending and return the form back to us as soon as possible. The Board of Trustees will generously subsidise $20.00 per Apiti School student and another $20.00 to every parent who provides transport. If you go other than with a school group, you would be paying a much larger sum of money.
We will send home a transport slip closer to the day. It is also important for us to have current health and permission forms as well as an indication of adults who will be able to come and help us. Unless we have attached a health profile, we have your child’s on file, but please letus know if there are any changes regarding medical problems, doctor, allergies or emergency contacts which were filled out in your child’s health profile for the previous EOTC trips.
Other members of the community are most welcome to come along, but we do need to know within the next few days, numbers and the desired activity, as we need to send all relevant details to the mountain within the next few days to confirm our booking. If you are interested, please ring the school and we will get the relevant forms to you for you to fill out so you can see what is available, the price etc.
Accounts will be sent home regarding payment.
Anyone is able to upgrade on the day, so if you feel this is a possibility, please make sure you have a little extra money with you.
Please make sure that your children have a really good packed lunch for the day, including drink and high energy snacks. There is food available up there, but it is very expensive. There is free water available on the mountain.
Also make sure that they have any medication that they may require in case of allergies or asthma.
Time :- You will need to leave home at about 6.30am as we will meet at Ohakune at 8.00. We will gather at the Information Centre / Public Rest Room area on the left hand side as you drive into Ohakune. We would like the students to have a substantial morning tea in the park and then we will make our way up the mountain.
We are unable to give you a drop off time as it will totally depend on the weather. If the weather packs up we will be home sooner rather than later, but if it stays lovely, we will stay until 4pm when the mountain closes.
It is suggested that everyone wears gumboots from the car-park to the equipment hire place.
Please make sure that your children have good quality warm/wet weather gear available to put on. Suggested
equipment for the day :-
Waterproof jacket and pants. Warm layers of clothing to account for changeable conditions. Warm, waterproof gloves or mittens. Thick warm socks. Warm headwear.
Goggles and/or sunglasses with full UV protection. Sturdy footwear.
Sunscreen for exposed skin and lips – minimum factor 15+, re-apply sunscreen regularly. Plenty of energy snacks and fluids.
Friends or family members may be able to help you with some of the above.
If you have problems with any of the above, please contact Mary.
Weed Buster Day
To be held on Friday the 4th of September at our native bush area.We now have a deer fence around the perimeter, thanks to Horizons who erected this fence. There is just a little bit of tying off to do, and the entrance way. Our students will design the entrance way as part of their learning. Later in the term, we will monitor possum activity and re-trap if necessary. We will be needing parental help for this along with chainsaws and prunning material.
Well that’s it for now folks, you’ll hear from us in a fortnight.
Regards, Mary, Nicki, Jo, Pat, and Christine.
