Welcome to Week 3 of Term 3, 2017.
2017 Term Dates : Term 3 : 24th July - 29th September. Term 4: 16th October - 20th December.
Welcome
We are delighted to welcome Autumn and her family to our school. Autumn starts Apiti School as a brand new 5 year old. We know Autumn will enjoy learning at our school.
Our focus for 2017 … is Mahi tahi - everyone working together collaboratively.
This term is participating successfully with others. As part of this we are working on our Enviro Schools plans.
Each whanau group is planning and planting up their edible vege tyre, please remember us if you have any suitable plants or cuttings they can plant. Each whanau group is also responsible for a part of the native area.
On 1st Aug each group worked with Rowena. Each whanau group is responsible for an action project which means the students take responsibility for their school eg Recyclers, well led by Sarah, organise recycling of paper and look after the worm farm, which needs a new lid and a bit of attention. The Super Small Blacks are led by Johnny, they are responsible for the gear shed and equipment, as well as running fitness programmes at times. The Hydro Rangers led by Phinece have just cleaned out the hot house ready for planting. The Expert Plantagators led by Tyler are responsible for the growing unit, taking cuttings and planting up seedlings, as well as planting around our school or selling plants. Fisher is the leader of the Community Creators which look after the library and the orchard. Look at our Apiti Weebly on the links and information button. It has links to each whanau blog down on the right hand side. Check out their plans.
These are judged at Lamb and Calf day. Each week the students are working on areas for judging at Lamb and Calf day . Check what is happening in your group here http://bit.ly/2ucOq8y

Apiti School Speech Competition - Thursday 17th August
This competition will be held at school in the Library on Thursday the 17th of August, starting at 1.30pm.
Oral language is an important part of the Apiti School curriculum and all students are working on their speeches. Some have written them and others will finish early this week. The senior room students is an informative speech on any topic, junior room students have chosen an ‘animal’ topic. Remember half the points are for content and half are for delivery.
It would be great if parents could set aside a little time to talk with, listen to and help with your child’s chosen topic, as practising at home and school gives students confidence.
All members of the community are welcome to attend our speech competition, so hope to see you here then.
The 2 senior winners of the Apiti School competition will then represent Apiti at the Oroua Speech Competition happening on Thursday the 24th of August in the Kimbolton Domain Clubrooms. All of our senior room students will attend this event - as transport allows, so please let Mary, Louise or Christine know if you are able to help out.
Turoa Ski Trip - 30th August (postponement dates : 31st August, 6th September).
This event is of-course weather dependant. We will check the forecast carefully in the days before as well as the morning of the trip as we will not go if the weather is at all doubtful - it’s just not worth it!
The Board of Trustees have most generously offered to cover the cost for all our students for the day, however parents will need to pay for themselves. Check prices on https://www.mtruapehu.com/winter/schools-youth-groups
All juniors will be doing the Discover Ski package. Most senior students have decided what they want to do, so speak to your child re-their decision and could all adults please text, email or ring with adult needs, so we can fill in the school booking form. We also need to know who is able to take transport as soon as possible please. There is a lot of clothing gear here, so please check before renting any. If you want to rent any gear we will need to know sizes. All senior students who have an all mountain pass will have a helmet. Thanks.
Enviro Up-cycled Woodwork -
We would really appreciate help on the afternoon of 10th August. Most students have their plan but students need help pulling apart the pallets and potato box. This is proving too hard for many. We welcome help from parents or community helpers. So parents grandparents, friends, we would love your help. Please ring Mary or Louise if you can help on another day and we will re-arrange our timetable. We have got some tools and nails at school or students can bring named tools from home but these remain the responsibility of the student.
Thanks to Hannah and Doug for getting us some pallets and the Corbetts for the potato box and pallets.
3. Usable items using upcycled wood.

ASSA Possum Hunt and Family Fun Day
My humblest apologies for not reporting back sooner! Firstly thanks SO much to the most amazing support and help from our school families AND community for running this event. Makoura Lodge is the most perfect location for this event (Thanks SO much for the use of this and your hard work on the day Kimberly and Chris – much appreciated) and our wonderful major sponsors: Hunting and Fishing, Kesty Manning Contracting, Horizons, AJ Productions, City Honda, Hopkins Farming Group Ltd, Apiti Golf Club & McDonalds, Oroua Transport … as well as the other numerous businesses and individuals that provided both prizes and monetary sponsorship.
We had more entries than last year and far more impressive deer entries this year. We eradicated from our local area 304 possums, 54 hares, 10 rabbits, 28 turkeys, 10 ducks and 7 goats!!! Well done everyone!!
We did have to spend some one off costs having signs done, buying a whole truckload of golf balls and various supplies and more prizes up for grabs so our expenses were up BUT we still managed to squeeze just under $3500 into our account … so next year with less layout costs and some rejigging of things this should be higher.
A massive thanks Hannah and Nikita who ran the children's’ activities – every child there had the MOST amazing day and your planning, organising of prizes and activities was exceptional – WELL DONE! Plus the hilarious putting up of posters and marketing info EVERYWHERE – FABULOUS EFFORT LADIES!
And the lovely ‘ladies in the kitchen’ (tongue in cheek!) who ensured everyone was all fed wonderfully … thanks to Ken for helping out on the BBQ with Nicole and Toni.
Thanks heaps to Tiff for all the running around (golf balls, sponsors, prizes etc) and money stuff you had to organise too. And Blair, Hannah and Nikita and other school parents for the brilliant work obtaining prizes for our entrants.
Thanks for the ‘boys’ who help set up the tents and took them down, organised the set up for weigh in on the day and helped with the removal of carcasses … and all the grunt work on the day. And a HUGE thanks to Bruce for the plucking of all the possums as they came in – MASSIVE JOB!! (We will need some others on this for next year please – especially on the Monday after the event.)
To everyone who came and had a great time and encouraged others to come – THANKS! We have such a wonderful community and I am overwhelmed with how much support you all offer to make this little place so GREAT! I’m sorry if I have missed individually naming anyone who helped … you are all totally amazing and your help is appreciated!
Thanks so much everyone … and we look forward to a more slick and profitable event next year!
- Maryann Pratt (ASSA Chairperson).
Regards, Mary, Louise, Penny, Linda, Pat, Pam, Mary B, Jenni, Cara and Christine.
