Fungal Foray - This week
The Fungal Network of NZ (Funnz) Funnz.org.nz is holding a Foray in the north western Manawatu based at Sixtus Lodge from 17 - 23 May. We (Funnz members) look for and collect small samples of fungi in the local bush, including reserves, then classify (describe - including microscopy, record and publish).
We invite Apiti School and members of the community to participate. You are welcome to join us in the field, commencing each morning (Mon, Tue, Thur, Fri) about 8.30 from Sixtus Lodge or to see classification of fungi, best from 3.00 pm in afternoons of Mon, Tue, Thur or Fri. Secondary children and adults are also welcome to attend our (colloquium), presentations day on Wednesday at the Apiti Hall. Please let me know if you plan to come on Wednesday. Contact Tom Davies 07 870 1478 0272 1144 67 Tom.DaviesNZ@outlook.com

This will be an excellent learning opportunity for students to learn more about 'Living things'.
Footrot Flats
This year's School Production will be 'Footrot Flats'. All students know their character for the play and scripts are being finalised. Learning their lines is important homework for all students.
Writing
It was great to see you all and set learning goals for term 2 at our recent student led reporting conferences. All parents were given a leaflet with the steps to help you comment on your child's writing. If your need help with this in any way please do not hesitate to talk with Mary or Nicki.
Internet Security
We have had a breach in our internet safety with an inappropriate comment posted on one child's blog. We have followed this up through watch dog, our security provider, and spent many hours checking our security and changing passwords. It was from an international address and has been dealt with.
All students understand the importance of internet safety and what to do if they are not comfortable.
As children are only at school for 11% of their time (According to'Learning and Leading'), we would suggest that you ensure that you know what your children are on on-line at home and remain vigilant in this every changing technological world

Sombreros
During week 4 we made sombreros for the garden festival.
We used a guy we made out of recycled materials and a giant hat.
We also made hats by wrapping fabric around them and used cones for the head part. We made the guy from plastic pipes and we turned him from a farmer to a South American person for our garden festival. We reused old hats and we turned them into sombreros by weaving flowers into them. We were going to use a gazebo for the man but it was too big for the site at Feilding so we used an umbrella.
The festival was on Saturday and Sunday. We won first prize and got some fruit trees. We get to choose what type of fruit trees. - By Fisher.Supa Small Blacks
Soccer
Shaun Whenuroa came to school last Tuesday to teach us some ways to teach the others skills for soccer. We are doing well with fitness and Shaun thinks that we have a good plan. But we needed help with PE so we got him to teach us some good activities to practice skills. We learnt good ways to teach others new ball sports.
- By Dylan. Guides - At guides this week we did mothers days gifts. We made bracelets, lip balm, bath bombs, mini pizzas and ANZAC cookies. We had to share the cooking room with the scouts who looked like they were just putting handfuls of bacon, lettuce and baked beans in a large pot. - By Nikki.
2.5.2015 / 9.5.2015 - Saturday Netball
Our netball team Colyton played Ross 8A4. That is their 4th best team and we won 43-3!!! Hannah shot about half of them! We then got moved up 4 grades into grade 4!
Then on the 9.5.2015 we played Ross 8A2 which is their 2nd best team!
We won 11-6. It was a very very hard game but our team really pulled together and tried our hardest!
- reported by Hannah and Brooke.
9.5.2015
It was a cold Saturday morning but I managed to get out of bed!
We had 2 grading games. The first game we played we won 15-4; I shot 7 goals.
The second game we played against Feilding intermediate and won 22-0.
I shot about half of the goals for this game. - By Hannah.
We went to Feilding to Manchester courts. My coaches name is Noodle. We lost all of our games. - By Phinece.
We drive into Feilding to the Manchester Courts. My coaches name is Dinah. We got one goal and lost and the second game we lost as well. It was just a grading game. - By Sarah.
I am WA / WD. Our team lost one game but we won the other game are team was really proud. We played Manchester street. My partner was WD and when I was WD my partner was WA. I am loving net ball, I can’t wait till the next game. - By Lauren.
I play for the Oroua Tigers. We won and it was fun. I scored two goals. Me and Josie had fun. - By Kirsten.
When I played soccer, I had to chase the ball and if you get six goals you then go into another team, the more goals you get the better team you go into. I didn't get any goals. - By Elliot.
Last Saturday we played rugby. We lost by miles. I think the score was 18 to 0. Me and my friends were disappointed because we lost the game. I don’t think they were playing fair though. Adam is our coach. He helps Peter. This is my first year playing rugby. I wanted to play rugby so I am not scared of people running at me. - By Jackson.
9\5\2015 - Saturday Rugby
I play rugby for Northland under nine’s at Victoria pack. We have started a new season. We have won all of our games. My dad did not want to coach rugby but they do not have enough coaches so my dad had to coach and I have scored 18 tries so far. - By Johnny.Last Saturday we played rugby. We lost by miles. I play rugby for Waikato under nine’s at Victoria park. We have just started a new season. We have a good squad. My team mate Nick and I are the attackers because we are mostly going straight through the gaps and offloading to each other. We are undefeated. - By James.
We didn’t play on Saturday because it was too wet. But I got into the reps try outs. I got into the 1st team. I played center and lock. I got a try off a penalty because the team from bulls thought it was going to the left but I was on the right so I had enough time to get a meter away from the try line and my momentum carried me over the line before I drifted out. Then Nick my team mate also scored a try in the dying minute of the first half. Then we beat some other team and the score was 2-1. Then we lost 2-0 against Te-Kawa then we had a semi final against the other Feilding team. We played ten minutes over time because we were so well matched. When they went to kick it the kid got distracted and missed his kick so Nick ran up, grabbed the ball and passed it to my other team-mate Riley and he scored. So we got a lucky win. But we had to face Te-Kawa again. We went half the time over-time we did in the semi final. But this was the real deal, the hullabaloo. I made two little ten meter bursts through. Just like the game before. So then we got a penalty in the same place as my try penalty. But Nick did my job and won the tournament for under 9’s Te-Kawa tournament. After we won the final I got my head gear signed by Milind Milniscuter the Hurricanes fullback. Then we got our medals and got our photo with the trophy. - By James

I am learning how how to use the split strategy to multiple numbers.
For example 22 x 2 = 20 x 2=40. 2 x 2 = 4. 40 +4 = 44. so the answer is 44. So that is split strategy. By Sarah.
