Education Outside The Classroom
Our Wellington learning experience was made possible by the support of parents and the BOT. Thanks to those parent helpers who came with us Sara, Fiona, Katherine and Pam. Also thanks to Maryann and Vic who looked after our cars in Waikanae and made it possible for the students to experience commuting. Here is an email I received from one of our fellow commuters:

Good afternoon
I’m a great believer in credit where it is due, and as such would like to complement your students on their behaviour on the 4.15pm commuter train from Wellington to Waikanae last week.
On a ‘usual’ day, this train is very quiet with most commuters taking the opportunity for a quiet ‘snooze’.  So when I got on the carriage, it was with a reasonable amount of dread that it would be a very ‘long’ trip home.
I was sitting close to a young man named Travis and his friend, who scooted over on the seat for a woman to sit down.  She proceeded to engage them in conversation about where they had been, and where they were from.  The conversation was so delightful that I lost the will to snooze.  These young people were so grounded, explaining to the woman about what sort of farms they were from, and why they were converting from deer to more profitable beef and sheep.  They talked about going possuming (something I did myself as a child, and something we did with our children), and other outdoor excitement and knowledge.  I was fully expecting them to explain the specifics of eeling to the woman next!  Quite apart from the fact that these young people had pretty good knowledge of the running of a farm, they were able to keep the woman next to them entertained the entire trip to Waikanae.
Having been exposed to ‘city kids’ for some time now it was a breath of fresh air as town children would generally be out of their depth without a cellphone or playstation to occupy them.
Well done to the children, the people looking after them, and the school.  -  Kind regards, Sharlene Bryant

We were given many compliments while on camp; on the harbour cruise, at Monsoon Poon, from Capital E and at the Youth Hostel to name some. It is pleasing to see that our students from a small rural school are so mature, well adjusted and keen to learn, that they feel at home and confident to seek and share their knowledge. They are all a credit to themselves, parents and staff. We look forward to reading the camp magazine which will be out soon. This is a great record of learning and an authentic context for writing.

Rugby
Learning Rippa Rugby Skills with the Manawatu Turbos last week
Today (7th) is the Sam Strahan Cup Tournament. Zahn, Huntah, Hannah, Lacey and Travis (reserve) have been selected for the Northern Oroua Representative Team with some students from Kimbolton.

The Junior Cup Tournament will be played on 9th. Congratulations to Brooke and Anneke who are in the Northern Oroua Representative Team. Good luck for the games.
Oroua Cluster Cricket Festival Day
Here is the info from Dave Meiring the Development Manager.
On 10th April as a follow up from the fortnightly cricket coaching, at Kowhai Park in Feilding. All the gear and umpires will be provided by the MCA. The focus of the day will be Fun so just having the kids out playing cricket will be great.
I would like the day to kick off at 10am with a welcome to all teams and the first game will start at 10:15am. All teams will get to play four games and we will have a break in the middle of the day for lunch. Everything will be wrapped up by 2:15pm so you can head back to school.
If it was to rain on the 10th then we will postpone the day until Term 4 and I will be in touch about sorting a date for that if required.
If there are any issues with this then please get in touch but I would just like to thank you for making this happen at such short notice. You have been the best cluster of schools I have had to deal with in getting a festival day up and running.

Could you please let the school know asap if you are able to help with transport on Thursday. All of the senior class James and Chloe will be going.

If you are able to help with picking up a carload of students and delivering them back to school at about morning tea time please let Mary or Nicki know.

Update
Just a reminder that myself, Jazz with help from Yvonne, will be walking from Apiti to Feilding (43km) to raise awareness of gynaecological cancers. I have a goal to reach $1000 by the time i walk this Saturday April the 12th.
I am writing to you to ask if you would be able to sponsor me / us either by walking with us all the way or part of the way, or with monetary, donations, or that of goods useful to the event?
I am a mother of 5 who has been through tests for a cancer i had never heard of, Ovarian cancer. I have been cleared as it was, in my case, a false alarm. Through all of this i have learnt that there is no fully conclusive non invasive test for this. This is not something picked up by a smear test. Sadly there are many more women out there that, like i myself was, are unaware of this.  You can find and follow my progress here: https://www.facebook.com/Jazzwalksforcancer

Community Dinner
The Community meal last Friday was well supported, and a really successful night. The Apiti students put on an impromptu concert including dance and singing.  A Pot Luck dinner will be held on the first Friday of every month in the Apiti Hall, with the next one on the 2nd of May - everyone is welcome and feel free to bring someone new from the area and introduce them to everyone.
