Welcome to week 11 the final week of term 3 2012.
We are delighted to welcome Cailee and Brianna Bowmar to Apiti School. Cailee is a Year 4 student in the senior room and Brianna is a Year 2 student in the junior room. We know Cailee and Brianna will enjoy learning at our school.

Oroua Hockey Tournament
This tournament happened on Friday the 14th of September. Below are some extracts from the thank you letters written to Kate and Tania.
'Thanks a-lot for coaching. I learnt a-lot; like you have to push the ball going in on an angle as well as calling before you pass.
It was so much fun. I was amazed that we went from 4th= in our last tournament to 1st!...and we were undefeated!! I think we won because of our teamwork and great skills. Like when Logan, Huntah and I would run up in a line and one of us would score a goal. Next time I hope we win and are still undefeated. It's a shame I won't be in the same team...but I bet we will have a stronger team next year because half of this years team will be in it!!' - Tom.
'Thanks for being our coaches for this event. The most challenging game and the one we used the most team talk was against Waituna West 2 because not only was it hard but we had to use all of our team and the whole field. there were moments that were tough and we just had to walk away. Because I have learnt new skills, it has encouraged me to join the summer league.' - Huntah.
Thank you for using your time to come down to coach us and teach us new skills. I learnt how to trap, push and how to hold the stick low. I also learnt lots about positions, holding the stick low for more control, what a shuttle is and to call for the ball. I basically learnt how to play hockey! We worked well together a s a team and we encouraged each other. We all thought positively; like when something didn't go to plan, we just carried on. I enjoyed playing hockey and learning all the new skills and having fun.' - Charlotte.
'Thanks for helping us get ready for hockey. I learnt how to push, not hit the ball and how to keep my feet out of the way. I also got better at holding the stick lightly so I could turn it back and forwards. Next time I can't wait for you to come and help us to get even better.

What I learnt to do is shuttle sprints because you have to run back and forth. The other thing I learnt was how to trap the ball, then move it to the side and pass. My favourite thing I learnt was to pass to your backs not your forwards. I liked the way you told us on the field you said "Try your best and get stuck in", the we went and scored a goal!!' - Logan.
'I learnt how to call the person to pass the ball to. I also learnt how to hold a hockey stick and I learnt how to hit the ball on an angle. We did lots of great teamwork; for example we used the space we had. - Ben.
'We learnt to use team work and to trick people by using other people when starting off. We had a great defence at times. We learnt some great skills. Our team-work was great. You developed some of our skills. - Jack.
'I learnt how to stop the ball, for example when I was goalie and I stopped the ball going into the goal. I also learnt how to pass the ball and work as a team. I enjoyed playing the first game becuase we then knew how we would have to play in all the games to put pressure on them.' - Hannah.
Mt Ruapehu Ski Trip
Thank you to all those parents who provided transport for this event. Again we struct it lucky with the weather for most of the day. Again the students gained more skills and confidence on the ski slopes. Accounts will be sent home in the near future.
Junior Room Ski Stories
I went skiing and I fell over while I was skiing. I went up the chairlift and at the end I didn't fall over.

I went skiing and I went on the chairlift. I nearly fell off it. I did skiing fast and I couldn't stop. To stop you have to do pizza. - Lauren.
We went skiing with Mum to Turoa Ski fields. We got on the chair lifts with Tyler. It was scary on the chairlifts. It is fun to learn to ski and do pizza and to stop. Yesterday on the pommel she gave me the round bit to help me get up the hill. - Danni.
We went skiing, it was a long trip to Mount Ruapehu and we were the first ones there at the Ohakune park. Logan was stuck in the baby swing, so I helped him get out of the swing. Soon everyone was there. Then we drove up Mount Ruapehu to the Turoa skifield. We got our boots sorted. My feet were really sore when I put them on. We strapped our boots on and got the right size skis. I had to get my balance. We had a lesson that helped me not to use my poles. The pommel took us back up the hill so we could ski down again. We went to the Turbos game. We wore our buckets on our head and had a flag. - Hayley.
I travelled up with Tyler and my family. I woke up last because I forgot it was the ski trip and I couldn't be bothered to get up. It was a long trip, but finally we got to Mount Ruapehu. I got all my gear. I was ready to ski down the mountain. I had my ski lesson and I learnt how to do Pizza to stop and French Fries to go fast. I went to the next level I went up a little jump. I fell over 5 times. the whole school came. I got better this year than last year because my lesson was better. - Alex.
My mum went skiing, my mum is good at skiing, she is so fast. - Johnny.
Home / School Collaboration Meeting
This meeting is tonight in the senior room / library, starting with the introduction at 6.15. Light refreshments will be served throughout the meeting.
At 6.30 we will meet Aevryl from Family Planning to discuss 'senior health' for Years 5 - 8. All other parents are welcome to join this part of the evening as well.
At 7.30 we have consultation re health, swimming, key competencies and lamb and calf day. There will also be an opportunity to discuss any other matters that you may like to raise.
Looking forward to seeing at least one parent from each family attend this very interesting meeting.

Sports Report - Hockey
Prize giving was held last Friday night for the Rangitikei area. The Oroua Cluster Hockey team, won the cup for 'Most Improved' team for Year 7 & 8 for the 2012 season. Well done guys!! - Stanley and Jack.
Condolences

Celebrating our Successes
Primary Teachers / Primary Principal Sabbatical Award
The Apiti School Board of Trustees congratulate Mary and Nicki on winning this award from Teachnz. For more information regarding this award, please go to Teachnz website : http://www.teachnz.govt.nz/teacher-awards/
There are only 100 principals and 50 teachers given this award annually so we are honoured to have both Mary and Nicki receive this highly sought after award. Mary and Nicki will take their sabbatical leave for 10 weeks each during term time 2013 but during different terms. There will be no cost to the school for a reliever teacher.
These awards are available to a teacher as part of their career pathway and is provided to engage in a balance of professional learning, reflection and rejuvenation. Mary and Nicki's Project Description is to investigate best practice in reading that effectively raises student engagement and achievement.

We have started doing Ballet dancing on Thursdays and any other days we can. Danni, Lauren, Sarah and I practice together in the Library. It is fun especially when we dance together. Anyone is welcome to join our classes.
Friday - Cooking
Golf - We are also practising golf - At playtime and lunchtime there will be lunchtime golf. It will be run by Logan and Stanley. At playtime there will be lessons and at lunchtime there will be a game. On Thursday there will be two games instead of lessons. - Logan

Keeping ourselves safe
Constable Sarah - On behalf of Apiti School we would like to thank Constable Sarah for sharing experiences with us. We have all enjoyed it heaps. Most of us know what's right and wrong and now we know how to be safe on our bikes/ Quads and the Internet. Also, what to do if you are being bullied. - Cole.
Fire Safety - On Friday 7th September Fire Officer Kerry came to teach us about fires. I learned that you could die in air above 70 degrees. All your blood goes to your heart and your brain starves and you collapse!
Fire Officer Kerry told us that when something burns it is the gases inside that burst into flames. In the Olden Days there was no plastic in our homes and you had 6 minutes to escape a fire. Today, because our houses have lots of plastic in them, we have ONLY 2 minutes! Did you know that plastic is made from Oil! - Ben / Travis /David.
TVNZ Good Sorts
Hope you all managed to tune in to TV1 last night! We have lots of positive feedback, many saying how well the students spoke ... great for our school, Jock and our community.
Hayden Jones came to interview us for Good Sorts. He interviewed me up at the bush. We had a big eyed camera staring at us. He interviewed me because I was talking with Jock about the blue duck. He interviewed us and Jock about all the Pests. The bush was closed in from the wind and we were surrounded by nature. Hayden filmed Jock setting the stoat trap and Stanley putting the egg in. When we had finished Hayden filmed us walking in the bush. We had to do lots of walking back and forward, back and forward to get lots of footage to put in the news on Sunday! Strawberry Planters
Most students have now designed their planter and planted their strawberry. These will be cared for at school. Students will be able to take them home over the holiday to ensure they get the best care possible. It may be useful to talk at home about what helps a plant thrive also. Any assistance (other than plant replacement!!), is allowed! These will be judged at Lamb and Calf Day. Please note the confirmed date for Lamb and calf Day: Thursday the 1st of November.

Oroua Hockey Tournament
We have entered a year 4-6 team and a combined year 7-8 team with Rangiwahia and Cheltenham school. All children need to ensure they have a mouth guard, shoes and shin pads (newspaper /magazines taped to your shins works well too!). We will have games throughout the day students, so please make sure you pack a water bottle and food for the whole day. Prize giving will be held at 2.30pm. Please let Nicki know if you need help with transport for your children.
Skiing
Forms were sent home last week. We would appreciate it if you could return them asap to assist with our booking. Thank you to those who have returned their forms. It is a major feat logistically but such a challenging and worthwhile learning experience!! Enrichment at Apiti
Over the last year and a half students have been exceptionally lucky to have the opportunity to learn the piano here at school. Much easier, cheaper and more time efficient than heading to town for music lessons! These will continue as an enrichment option. Other enrichment options include guitar, ukulele, tennis, golf, athletics. Some are free and others incur a fee, depending on the provider. We are very lucky to have so many people happy to provide enriching learning experiences for your children.
Digi Awards
As we all work on our entries for the digi awards, which will also be lamb and calf day indoor entries, we'd like to thank you for your support. There are many more opportunities for students to take photos and for photo essays, and sequencing from home. Your help with cameras, removable drives and photos makes it easier for us and the students. Also many of you have lots of knowledge in this area. Special thanks to Kat, Ryan's Aunty who has amazing IT skills, but has also helped the students develop their ideas and turn them into reality. It has been wonderful for all of us to have worked with her last week. Thanks Kat! Please contact the school if you have any ideas in this.
Home / School Collaboration
Many thanks to all parents who took the time to join us as we shared learning in maths and some ideas to help your children learn to there fullest by transfering learning between home and school. We have received some great feedback and are always open to getting together with you following our collaboration meeting to discuss learning pathways more specific to your children. Please just make a time with Mary or Nicki.
Our next meeting will be on Monday the 24th of September. As this will include a section sharing our health / PE programme (including Puberty Education for our most senior students this has usually been offered to year 5-8 students, and is on the discretion of parents), it will be an evening meeting. Light refreshments and snacks will be provided as it will be a great chance to get together before the end of term.
6.30 - Consultation on health including puberty with Aevryl Jestin, from Family Planning.
7.30 - Get together to discuss other matters. Maths and Literacy have been covered but all other areas of school and the curriculum or any other concerns . Please tell Mary or Ben of any matters you would like discussed at the meeting eg ASSA funding, Education Outside the Classroom, Computers, or any other issues.

Junior Room Stories
I have a new lamb. It has black in its head and its legs. Its a boy. It has a coat, it is purple. My sister has a lamb, its coat is pink. It's my lambs birthday. Billy Bunter is my lamb because it bunts me. - By Lauren.
I went to Dereks house and I was playing a game, it was a shooting game. When we went home, my lamb wanted her milk. When I let her off her lead, she chased me. - By Danni.
In the weekend, I went to Johnny's house to watch the All Black's v's Argentina. At Johnny's, Johnny's lamb got lost, so Johnny and I looked for it and we found it.
At our rugby we got in the finals, but we didn't win and we won against the best team, but Tyler and I had to go on their team, it was 1 to 2 to my team. I got free sausages and a drink.

Alena bumped me and I went back to the fence. When we opened the door, Alena bumped me back and I landed on my bottom. Alena is my calf. - By Derek.
It was rugby and we won most of our games. Wanganui had only five people in their team. Our team got into the finals and we lost. After the rugby, we had to line up and get a ticket to get a sausage and a chocolate or a strawberry drink. I had the best rugby season ever, because my Dad was the coach. - By Hayley.

Enrichment at Apiti
Over the last year and a half students have been exceptionally lucky to have the opportunity to learn the piano here at school. Much easier, cheaper and more time efficient than heading to town for music lessons! These will continue as an enrichment option. Other enrichment options include guitar, ukulele, tennis, golf, athletics. Some are free and others incur a fee, depending on the provider. We are very lucky to have so many people happy to provide enriching learning experiences for your children.
Digi Awards
As we all work on our entries for the digi awards, which will also be lamb and calf day indoor entries, we'd like to thank you for your support. There are many more opportunities for students to take photos and for photo essays, and sequencing from home. Your help with cameras, removable drives and photos makes it easier for us and the students. Also many of you have lots of knowledge in this area. Special thanks to Kat, Ryan's Aunty who has amazing IT skills, but has also helped the students develop their ideas and turn them into reality. It has been wonderful for all of us to have worked with her last week. Thanks Kat! Please contact the school if you have any ideas in this.
Home / School Collaboration
Many thanks to all parents who took the time to join us as we shared learning in maths and some ideas to help your children learn to there fullest by transfering learning between home and school. We have received some great feedback and are always open to getting together with you following our collaboration meeting to discuss learning pathways more specific to your children. Please just make a time with Mary or Nicki.
Our next meeting will be on Monday the 24th of September. As this will include a section sharing our health / PE programme (including Puberty Education for our most senior students this has usually been offered to year 5-8 students, and is on the discretion of parents), it will be an evening meeting. Light refreshments and snacks will be provided as it will be a great chance to get together before the end of term.
6.30 - Consultation on health including puberty with Aevryl Jestin, from Family Planning.
7.30 - Get together to discuss other matters. Maths and Literacy have been covered but all other areas of school and the curriculum or any other concerns . Please tell Mary or Ben of any matters you would like discussed at the meeting eg ASSA funding, Education Outside the Classroom, Computers, or any other issues.

Junior Room Stories
I have a new lamb. It has black in its head and its legs. Its a boy. It has a coat, it is purple. My sister has a lamb, its coat is pink. It's my lambs birthday. Billy Bunter is my lamb because it bunts me. - By Lauren.
I went to Dereks house and I was playing a game, it was a shooting game. When we went home, my lamb wanted her milk. When I let her off her lead, she chased me. - By Danni.
In the weekend, I went to Johnny's house to watch the All Black's v's Argentina. At Johnny's, Johnny's lamb got lost, so Johnny and I looked for it and we found it.
At our rugby we got in the finals, but we didn't win and we won against the best team, but Tyler and I had to go on their team, it was 1 to 2 to my team. I got free sausages and a drink.

Alena bumped me and I went back to the fence. When we opened the door, Alena bumped me back and I landed on my bottom. Alena is my calf. - By Derek.
It was rugby and we won most of our games. Wanganui had only five people in their team. Our team got into the finals and we lost. After the rugby, we had to line up and get a ticket to get a sausage and a chocolate or a strawberry drink. I had the best rugby season ever, because my Dad was the coach. - By Hayley.
