After School Athletics
Athletics club will be starting again this Thursday and will run from 3 to 4.15pm each Thursday until the Oroua Athletics Sports. Please let Jo (phone 3284805) know if your child would like to attend. We will also require parent helpers at each rotation.


Lamb and Calf Day LearningTasks 2011
Context – How it works.

Students have now discussed the learning activities they think link well to our 'How it works' theme.
The following activities to be completed by the students on the morning of Lamb and Calf Day were decided ...
(the tasks with a "!" after them also meet the criteria to be entered in the Manawatu Show the weekend after our Lamb and Calf Day)

8. Miniature Scene
The best Miniature Scene will:
· Be in a container such as a roasting tray
· Be a creation showing how something works
· Use natural materials as part of the display
9. Decorated Gumboot!
The best Decorated Gumboot will:
· Reuse a gumboot
· Show creativity and originality
· Use colour, texture and materials effectively to create an overall look
· Have care taken in its presentation

10. Novelty Hat!
The best Novelty Hat will:
· Use any style of hat
· Have general theme
· Develop this using creativity and originality
· Use colour, texture and materials effectively to create an overall look
· Have care taken in presentation such as placement and attachment of decorations

11. Lego Creation (Optional)
The best Lego Creation will:
· Be a model of something that works – Science and Technology
· Be of any size
· Include details that make the model realistic
Note: This may be completed at home and bought to school at any stage. Certificates will be given for this activity but points will not go toward the overall placings.

Cooking
As we have in previous years, whanau groups will cook an item for Lamb and Calf day. This year all Whanau Groups will also cost, design, make, package and market a sweet/ series of sweets. This will be completed in whanau groups before Lamb and Calf Day and their produce will be sold on the day. Through this authentic learning activity we aim to further develop:
  1. Whanau group skills such as planning and organisation, leadership, managing self, relating to others and participating and contributing.
  2. Financial Literacy
  3. Cooking and Packaging (geometry and measurement)
  4. Marketing
The aim for each group is to make the tastiest treat ... and the most profit when their books are balanced!!

1 . Graphic design

Information/environmentalsustainability poster

The bestdigital graphic design will:

· Have a visual impact on theviewer - grab attention.

· Convey a clear message to atargeted audience

· Use words, images, symbols andgraphs (where appropriate)

· Have a clear heading,subheadings/logo to enhance the message

· Have a relationship and a flowbetween the elements

· Be able to be viewed in A3 size

2. Science Investigation
Use investigation process to show anaspect in our world works

TheScience Investigation will:

· Include all of theelements of a science or technology investigation (See student criteria sheet)
· Bepresented in a logical sequence
· Usethe appropriate formats / genre to communication information and supporttopic eg lists, graphs,tables, photos, diagrams, procedural text and explanations
· Usefont, colour and layout effectively to communicate findings
· Havereferences listed and acknowledged

· Beuseful for purpose , functionality, practical aspects taken into account
· Focuson design - pleasing / interesting / unique
· Havesmooth edges and base.
· Havea label advertising use and purpose.
The best flowerarrangement will:
· Lookbalanced in the vase
· Complimentthe style of the vase
· Usecolours and heights effectively
5. Lamp – decorated shade and creative base
Thebest lamp will:
· Showa well thought out design
· Havea balanced shape
· Havethe base and shade complementing one another
· Beascetically pleasing – using colour, patternand texture
· Havea smooth well covered base or well designed structure
· Havecare taken when applying colour and sticking decoration on
6. Creative photography
The best photograph will:
· Betaken by the student.
· Conveya message
· Have goodcomposition (Thirds rule; foreground; background; balance and order)
· Showone or more of the elements (people, line, colour, light)
· Demonstrateawareness of angle; fame and/or macro
· Be alarge size (e.g. at least 1 MB), as images will be viewed on a screen forjudging (check size)
· Beprinted onto A4 and framed using A3
· Have anoriginal title that gives perspective to the photo.

7. Lamb or Calf Drawing
The best Lamb and Calf Day Picture will:
· Bedrawn by the student onto A3 paper.
· Havegood composition (Thirds rule; foreground; background; balance and order)
· Beeither an accurate copy or be drawn in a particular style.
· Demonstrateawareness of angle and perspective
· Show useof a particular medium effectively e.g. pencil, pastel, dye, crayon, paint
· Have anaccompanying photo of the original title that gives perspective to the photo.

Digi Awards
The Manawatu Principals' Assoc has been thrilled with the number of entries they have received ... over 600 entries from 27 schools in the region. These are currently being judged. We have been given a limited number of tickets to the inaugural Digi Awards Evening on Monday, October 31 at 6.30. We would like to offer them to our interested students and their parents.
