Coming up ...
Student led conferences will be held next Monday and Tuesday. This is an opportunity for your child to share their learning and celebrate their progress with you. We will also set goals together to further enhance learning and accelerate progress. Each conference will be 20 minutes long. Please write your child's name in the time slot that best suits you on the separate page at the top of this newsletter or email Nicki or Mary with your time preference. Should these times not suit, just talk to Mary and Nicki and we will organise an alternative date together. This is only one part of our reporting process. We are always available to catch up and ongoing learning is regularly celebrated and shared on your child's e-portfolio.
Speeches
All students are currently writing their persuasive speeches at school. The topic is "In a perfect World..." This is also the topic for the television advertisement at the Manawatu Digi Awards. Thanks for providing the opportunity for your children to further develop their arguments through discussion with you at home. This helps them develop their argument, the evidence to justify their beliefs and the use of persuasive and emotive language. These will be presented at our school assembly on Friday the 3rd of June.

Rhythm Interactive
This will be happening at Kimbolton Hall on Monday the 13th of June, and will include some instrumental workshops/ presentations earlier in the day. This will involve the whole school, so we will need transport to and from Kimbolton on this day. If you play an interesting instrument or would like to help with a workshop on this day please let us know. More details closer to the day.
School Production
We are in full swing preparing the script for this. Students will be bringing home their words to learn this week. The diction skills learnt in singing will be developed further through our oral language focus here. Thanks to Jo and Maryann.
Bon Apiti
Healthy lunches begin tomorrow!! This term we will be having potato wedges available each Tuesday and stuffed sausages each Thursday. Both lunch options cost $2.00. We will be using our produce from the herb garden and hydroponic unit. If you have sausages you are able to donate we would appreciate it. Thanks from the Bon Apiti Committee.
Interschool teaching
Next Monday afternoon senior students will be visiting Kiwitea School. The purpose is to teach Kiwitea students how to use their wikis. The following week a group of Kiwitea students will visit us and teach us how to play the ukulele. This will be an extension to our ukulele lessons with Jo Eastwood. Learning in this way has been proven to be beneficial. Students are receptive to learning from their peers and teaching others is a powerful way of developing oral language and consolidating understanding. If you are able to help with transport to Kiwitea next Monday afternoon please let Nicki know.
After School Winter Club
After School Winter activities for school age children will be happening every Tuesday starting on the 24th May from 3 - 4.30pm. Activities will include making sweets/lollies, crafty things. Cost recovery is still to be finalised, but will be minimal , if any. Parent helpers would be great. Please phone Deltina on 3284 529 or Wendy on 2384 525 if you require further information.

Dairy Farmers - Help Affco Support our School - "Cash for Schools"
Through Affco's 'cash for schools' scheme, Affco will donate 40c for every bobby calf you supply in 2011 to the rural primary school of your choice - hopefully that's us! This will not come off the schedule payment; it is a donation on your behalf over and above the price you receive for your calves. All you need to do, is nominate your desired primary school (that's us)! on your Seasonal Animal Status Declaration form and at the end of the season Affco will donate to (that/our) school 40c for every calf you have supplied to Affco. We would really appreciate any funds received through this scheme.
'The Awesome Colgate Carton Race'
Remember we still need your empty Colgate Toothpaste Cartons!
Our school is competing to win a share of $60,000 worth of new sports gear.
It is part of a campaign called the Awesome Colgate Carton Race and the winning schools simply have to collect the most Colgate toothpaste cartons per pupil.
We have until the 30th of June to collect as many cartons as we can get our hands on, so please give them to your child to bring to school, or drop them off at our office. Thanks for your support and thanks for giving us a sporting chance!
Well that's it for this week folks, will catch you again in a fortnight. Regards Mary, Nicki, Mary B, Pat and Chris.
