What's been happening ...
Jubilee
Wasn't this a fantastic opportunity to catch up with old friends and colleagues! We all loved the opportunity to be involved in such a special weekend for Apiti. Well done to the many people who put hours in behind the scenes to make this a success. We would like to especially thank the Corbett Bros. for lending their truck and Neil for driving it, Jo for helping with the float, Mr and Mrs Corpe for lending us some olden day clothes and Mr and Mrs McIntyre for the lollies.

My reflection
My heart was thumping with excitement. I jumped out of the car and raced to get into my costume. I was old … I wore this lovely blue dress and a bonnet. I had to lift up my dress because it was too long. I walked over to the float. I carefully walked up the ladder and sat in my desk.
I was at the front behind Mrs Cuming’s desk with Brooke, Chloe and Ava.
On the way there only Brooke and I sat in the little desk because Chloe and Ava came with their parents. We were going really fast and then all of a sudden the driver put the air brakes on. I fell off my chair and banged my head on Logan’s desk. We never found out why Neil stopped because it was dark! We finally arrived at the Apiti Domain where the parade started. Some boys took the curtains off the truck. We put all the desks up and sat in our spots and waited. While I waited, I practised my part. It was looking at the world globe and trying to find New Zealand. Then we got two lollies, they were yummy.
Finally the parade started. We drove slowly behind the pipe band. I felt like I was on a giant turtle.

Reflection by Tom
“Uhhh,” I moaned. I felt like I was riding a giant tortoise to Apiti. The only things in my mind were to sit, wait, talk and hope that the bagpipe guys would go faster.
I was in the old section and the vest I was wearing was so tight that it felt like all of my guts were moving to the lower part of my body.
About fifteen minutes later we went past a house and there were about two people there and that meant slingshot time! So I whipped out my slingshot and whispered, “Prepare to die!”
“Fling. Fling!
“Ha Ha Ha,” I giggled as I flung a lolly into the crowd.
Another fifteen minutes later I grabbed on to the bar, spun my head out and peered up the road once more. The crowd was only ten metres away so I jumped back into my desk but this time I had a smile on my face.
While I was waiting for the ten minutes to while away, I had some fruit bursts. When I threw one into my mouth it was like a grenade getting thrown into a cavern, but instead of an explosion it was a burst of intense flavour!
As the playcentre kids skipped along, a light bulb lit up in my head ... I should sling a lolly at them. So I slung it hoping they would see it. But no, they didn’t!
Then I heard the crowd cheering as we made our way to the village. By Tom

Visitors to our School
On the 1st of February I picked up the phone … who? what? where? As I listened I got all flustered then I passed the phone on to Dad. Five minutes later Mum, Charlotte, Lauren and I were all told we would have visitors, Marvin & Lillian. They had come from Iowa, USA and read dad’s article in the Farming Ranch magazine.
On the 3rd of February, when I got home from school, Dad & I took Marvin & Lillian for a farm tour. First we took them to the run off where we have Steers & last years Calves. After we had taken them round that, we drove back round to the dairy farm where we have 400 cows and a 28 a-side herring bone shed.
On the way home Marvin told us about their farm. They farm 1700 acres. On it they grow corn, soybeans and hay and have a herd of 200 beef cows. The next day on the way to New Plymouth they stopped in at school to see what a New Zealand rural school was like. We shared with them some of our learning and we learnt a little bit about school education in Iowa. We even managed to show them the Hydroponics Glass house before it started to rain.

Keeping you up to date with our learning ...
Music
As teachers of your children, our commitment is to provide a wide range of learning opportunities. Our aim is to inspire them as lifelong learners in their area of passion. Where possible we like to use our local expertise. This year we are lucky to have Jo B and Maryann teaching us music each Wednesday. All senior students will have the opportunity to learn the piano, with Jo for term one and two. This is funded by the school. They have also chosen either the Recorder or Glockenspiel. It is great to see the enthusiasm after only a week of tuition. Students have been allowed to bring their Recorder or Glockenspiel home to practice. They are quite expensive and I am sure they will take good care of them. Your child will need to ensure that they bring their musical instrument to school each Wednesday for their lesson. A small amount of time has been allocated daily to practice the keyboard. If your child is able to practice at home that would be great! We'd like to thank the playcentre for letting us use their keyboard, it is motivating to use such up to date technology. Senior children will be learning about musical theory to support their practical learning. Junior children will be learning the foundations of music. In the afternoons, Jo and Maryann are helping us enhance our singing skills and song repertoire. These are opportunities that often costs parents a large amount and we appreciate Jo and Maryann's expertise and are really pleased to give our children this taster!! Who knows where they will choose to take it in the future!!
Swimming
We are currently training for the Oroua Swimming sports. It is fantastic to see the progress that many children have made in swimming and their confidence and enthusiasm to participate in the championship events. As most of our children are not involved in regular weekly swimming clubs, training needs to be a cooperative affair!! We have asked Pam Corpe to help our children with swimming lessons each Monday and Friday. Pam teaches students at Kiwitea on the other days. Committed championship swimmers will also be given the option to train on a Tuesday and/or Thursday at the Makino with Nicki for the next two weeks. Apiti School will pay for Pam's tuition and the Makino entrance fee. (An exception will be made if students need extra time for their Apiti Show Learning tasks). We also encourage our children to train during the week whenever you are in town. They all have a training schedule developed with Pam.
Apiti Show
Students are currently writing their letters, as if they lived in the past. Visiting the Apiti Museum has really helped bring this era alive for your children. Thanks to those who set up and look after the musuem, it is a great asset to our community and well worth a visit. Discussing at home what life would have been like at this time will also help students with their letter writing. All students have an article to paint and most have taken a photo they believe represents our local area. Thanks for your support with this. Many students are now thinking about old articles that will make an effective mobile. The mobile should follow a theme. The criteria are on the the home page of our wiki.

Our Annual Education Outside the Classroom Experience
The date for camp is 8 - 10th of March (See our School Calendar link at the top of our newsletter). We have decided after looking at many options to go to the Hawkes Bay for our learning this year. Plans are in full swing and students are currently researching at options. These are learning strategies that children will transfer into a huge range of situations in their future. Camp options will be discussed at tonight's ASSA meeting.
We will be sending home a blanket consent form for all EOTC trips through-out 2011. Please sign this form and return it to school as soon as possible.
Dental Therapist
The dental therapists, Helen & Vanessa, have completed their time here at Apiti School for 2011. They have been and are impressed with our students overall attitude to healthy eating - well done! They would still like to reinforce the message of regular brushing and to watch all sugar intake and to drink lots of water rather than sweet drinks. Keep brushing, keep smiling and they will see you all again next year. If you have any tooth problems, please contact Helen at Lytton St School Dental Clinic on 323 6686 or ring 0800talkteeth.
