Oroua Schools Junior Large Ball Day
Thank you to Kiwitea for organising this very educational day for the Juniors from the Oroua Schools. The students learnt new games and participated and contributed to their team, which included students from other Oroua Schools. It was great to see the sportsmanship of our students and how well they communicated with new and old friends. This opportunity for co-operation is valued as students develop key competencies. Also thank you to those parents who provided transport to and from this event, and thank you to those parents who supported the children and stayed and helped out.
Library Stocktake
On Tuesday the 7th of December, we will be carrying out a Library stocktake. We would appreciate it if everyone could search at home for any library books and return them to school before this date. Thank you.
Board of Trustee Meeting
The next Board of Trustee meeting will be held on Thursday the 16th of December starting at 6.00p.m. in the staff room.
All members of the public are welcome to attend.
ICT
On Tuesday the 16th of November, 10 students from Mataroa School came here to learn how to make a wiki, how to change a wiki, how to add animation, upload a video and photo, how to embed in a wiki and how to write, edit and link to a wiki. We also taught them how to do other fun stuff like Photo peach, Glogster and Xtra-normal. - By Ashleigh
Last Wednesday Chevelle, Caleb K, Ethan and Cole visited Kimbolton School to teach them how to set up and use a wiki. I enjoyed teaching them how to upload a photo. By Chevelle and Huntah
Enviro Learning
Last Thursday morning the Manchester Street Enviro-kids came up to our school. We shared our Bush block with them. We divided them into 5 groups and they visited all of the areas. We shared our learning in the bush with them and did some activities to practise this. When they came to us, we told them about the ferns and Bush lawyer. After that they came back to school. We gave them morning tea and showed them around our school. By Logan and Sam
We visited Manchester Street School on Friday. They showed us their enviro-school and we learnt about what they did. Travis' favourite part of the tour was the gear shed and miniforest. Tom enjoyed the playground; especially the bridge. We learnt from nearly everything they did. They are a good enviro-school. We are looking forward to working more with them next year. By Tom and Travis
Bike Ramp
On Monday the 22nd of November, Albert James from the Manawatu District Council came to have a look at our school ramps and to get a design for some new ones. Cole and I did a quick blueprint and he said that it will take about three weeks to put the ramps together. We are all looking forward to this. By Caleb K and Cole
Swimming Instruction
These lessons have now been completed. Thank you to all parents for supporting this very worthwhile exercise and for taking the time to provide transport to and from these lessons. These yearly lessons are greatly improving the swimming skills of our students and helps develop water confidence, which is integral to water safety in our local rivers and water ways. It is hoped they will build on these swimming skills over the holidays, so that we can reap the benefits at the Oroua swimming sports being held next March.
Accounts will be sent home in the very near future, please pay them promptly so this can be settled this year.
Every Friday for the last five weeks Apiti School students went to the Makino Pool. We learnt to swim in groups and had free time and time to practise. Our group did four lengths of each stroke mostly. Thanks to all of the parents who took transport. We all learnt something new, became better swimmers and enjoyed it heaps! By Charlotte and Hannah
Year 8 Leavers Dinner
This event will take place on the 30th of November for our Year 8 students and their parents. This will take place in the Apiti Tavern starting at 6.00p.m. The guest speaker will be Sarah Goss.
Oroua Group of Schools Athletics - Friday 3rd December
These athletics are to take place this Friday the 3rd (p.p. 10th December), at Timona Park in Feilding. You will need to be at Timona Park by 9.45 so students are ready to assemble before the 10am start. (Timona Park is off Simon St which is the second on the left past the North End BP station on the corner of Kimbolton Rd and North St). All students participate in this event. The junior circuit (for children aged 5 - 7 years) is in front of the soccer rooms on the sprint track and the senior circuit (for children aged 8 - 12+ years) is on the athletic track in front of the athletic club shed. Students need to wear their correct school uniform for this day please. All students need to take their lunch, plenty to drink, a hat and sunscreen. Lunch will be available between 12:05 and 12.35. Kiwitea School will have sausages, muffins and drinks on sale throughout the day. The senior students day is expected to end at approximately 2.30. The junior students will finish at lunchtime and then become the responsibility of their parents / caregivers. However these times are only a guide and parents who leave should return to the park early in-case the programme finishes early.
Parents will need to provide transport for their own children and the bus will not run at all on this day. If the event is postponed due to weather conditions (not looking likely), an announcement will come over the radio from 7am onwards and the phone tree will operate. Parents are asked to help with the events our school is responsible for (senior high jump and junior ball throw), so please make yourself available during the day to help out with these events, as we can not run them without your help.
Safety - The river, the road and the playground are out of bounds to all children of all ages at all times!!
Beach Study

You will have noticed that we had Monday or Tuesday penciled in for a study of the beach, water, tides and shore with Anwyl Minaar. Unfortunately the tides and available time do not coincide! We have decided to delay our trip to the beach until next year to enable us to make the most of this learning opportunity.

Future Planning
All students will continue over the next three weeks to reflect on their learning over the year as part of their end of year reporting to parents, finalize publication of their picture books to be sent to help students in Vanuatu, put together our end of year magazine, practice for the Oroua Athletic Sports, plan and implement our Green Gold Enviro Celebration, our end of year student celebration, and continue to share with and learn from experts such as Brian Coles and Ange Armstrong-Lush. Learning really is for life!
