Our Young Achiever of the Year 2010 - Emma W
This is extremely well deserved.
She was presented the award at the Young Achievers Night last Friday. Emma's photograph along with a summary of her achievements can be viewed in last Thursdays Feilding Herald.
There are already students striving for this honour next year with the initiative and leadership skills they are developing.

Lamb and Calf Day

Well we managed to successfully judge the calves and lambs in between the heavy showers. It was great to see so many parents / grandparents and community members here on the rather damp day supporting the children.

A huge thank you to the following who helped out in any way during the day and made the day a great success :-

Indoor Judges :- Rhonda Bennett, Jo Eastwood, Esther Knight, Gaylene Knight & friend Erica and Chrissy Lowe.

Outdoor Judges :- Hamish Pike – our friendly vet from Totally Vets, Rhonda Bennett, Donna Forbes, Andrew Knight, Kit McCrae and Sandi Warren.

Totally Vets for supplying the ribbons and rosettes. Michael Bourke for judging the Native area.

Pat Prince & Shirley Goodall for writing out all the indoor certificates and helping the students with their indoor displays. Pat and her helpers for the loads of dishes during the day.

June for supplying the yummy scones for the judges morning tea.

ASSA parents for supplying and serving the judges a great lunch.

Richard and Ben for supplying the scrim and for those who helped erect the scrim. Vaughan for supplying and erecting the calf ring. Deltina & Vaughan for mowing the circles.

Parents who helped with the BBQ. Blair & Fiona for kindly having their woolshed on standby – it was touch & go, but it was great we didn’t need it again this year.

Sheree for organising the grocery raffle. Congratulations to those who won the raffle. Sonya for organising the lotto. To all our parents for supplying such a great afternoon tea and for all the support given to the school for raising a lamb or a calf, and of-course our great students and their lovely lambs and calves. It was wonderful to see every child in every family with either a lamb or a calf. This day creates a learning opportunity which encourages children to learn the responsibility of just how to care for a lamb or calf.

Porina Moth Tracking
Thanks to Caleb K and Jacob for taking on the leadership for this. They have made the traps and recording sheets. The next step is gathering the data. Could those children involved please bring their totals for the week to school each Monday for graphing. Thanks.

Lunches
Dear parents,
We have decided on pizzas and juicies for this term. This started today, Monday the 1st of November. We will be selling a serving of pizza for $2 and one juicie for $1 each. If any one has any ingredients suitable for pizzas, they would be very much appreciated. If any families donate any ingredients they will receive one free piece of pizza. - Thanks Emma and Nastia

Displays
Thanks to Emma and Nastia for updating all of our foyer displays. Our lamb and Calf Day learning looks great.

ICT Lessons
This term we have offered to teach others some of the skills we have developed using ICT and in particular web2.0 tools. This is a great opportunity for for our students to relate to others and share with a wider audience. So far 3 schools have booked a time. In some cases we will be teaching at their school and in others they will be visiting us. We will be integrating planning for this into our classroom literacy and ICT programme.

Farmers Market
Whanau Groups are currently planning setting up a stall at the Feilding Farmers Market to sell some of their 'wares'. We are currently aiming for the last 3 Fridays that we are swimming. This makes sense as we are already in Feilding. If it is worthwhile, we will continue it until Christmas. This is a fantastic real context for learning where the planning and preparation will be just as valuable as the skills interacting with the public and handling money when manning our stall.

Swimming

Swimming lessons continue this Friday the 5th and also the 12th, 19th & the 26th at the Makino Aquatic Centre in Feilding. As per usual swimming experience and water confidence are our main learning focus' for the day. We will plan during the next 4 weeks however to slot in a time to sing at a Home for the Elderly and to man our Market Stall. Thank you to all parents who made transport arrangements last Friday. Thank you to every one who returned their transport slips and have offered transport sometime over the next 4 Fridays. A reminder that students need to take a packed lunch, a drink, two named towels and goggles please.

Oroua Year 8 Leavers Dinner

This event will take place on the 30th of November for our Year 8 students and their parents only. This will take place in the Apiti Tavern starting at 6.00 for drinks followed by the meal. The quest speaker will be Sarah Goss.

Thank You!

A huge thank you to the Dearlove family for the donation of a knap sack and other miscellaneous materials - this is most appreciated. We would also like to thank Murray from the 'big red shed' for donating several sturdy rulers for our students to use in the classroom - they were very well received.

We would like to thank everyone who helped out with the rally car BBQ last Saturday :- Maryann, Brooke & Johnny, David V, Neil, Logan & Hayley, Sam, Caleb & Sarah J, Huntah & Tyler, Ben B and Chantell for being on standby.

FEILDING JUNIOR CRICKET

All primary school cricketers are invited to Kowhai Park 5pm Wednesday 10 November for some fun games and the opportunity to learn new skills with coaches from Manawatu Cricket. Parents come and have some fun with your children. You dont need to be registered with Feilding Junior Cricket to come along. We will have a sausage sizzle to conclude the evening. Blowing Our Own Trumpet!!

Congratulations on achieving your Green-Gold Award!

On behalf of the staff and board of The Enviroschools Foundation, please convey our congratulations and thanks, to the children, teachers and many others who are involved in your enviroschool. We know that it takes a team effort, strong leadership and a long-term commitment, to undertake the in-depth environmental education that your centre is doing. Apiti School is obviously a role model for many other schools and also for people in your community.

The Enviroschools Foundation is an independent not-for-profit trust based in Waikato.

Apiti School joins a small but growing number of Green-Gold schools.

The Enviroschools foundation will arrange a celebration event for your achievement in the near future. Congratulations again, Heidi Mardon (National Director, Enviroschools Foundation).

...........................................................................................................

Dear teachers, parents and especially students of Apiti School - Congratulations to you all for achieving your Enviroschools Green-Gold award recently. We loved the way you were able to share all the wonderful things you have done so far on your sustainability journey. We loved the pride, passion and enthusiasm with which you shared your achievements. Apiti School is an inspiring model, and students - you are very lucky young people being prepared so beautifully for life in the 21st century where sustainability issues will need to be addressed by us all. Regards, Christine, Jan & John.

..........................................................................................................

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Apiti School for passing your reflection for an Enviroschools Green-Gold award. A reflection you passed with flying colours, this is an outstanding achievement. I appreciate the amount of time, effort and energy a Green-Gold represents, but I trust the journey has been both an enjoyable and rewarding one for the board, teachers, students and the community.

Horizons Regional Council is immensely proud of what you have achieved, and the fact that you will become the third Green-Gold recipient in the Region, and the 32nd in the country. Well done Apiti School. - Michael McCartney (Chief Executive Horizons Regional Council).

Well that's it for this week folks, will catch you again in a fortnight. Regards, Mary, Nicki, Pat, Mary B & Christine.
