Healthy Lunches
We are continuing with our healthy pizza for lunch every Tuesday and Friday. These are proving to be a popular choice. Donation of ingredients would be very much appreciated.

Working Bee
At the recent Board of Trustee meeting, the Board felt we needed to have a working bee before the end of this term as there are several jobs that need to be carried out i.e clean out the spouting, line the P.E shed, take out the concrete kerbing around a particular garden, rake over the play-area bark etc. The working bee will be held this Thursday the 19th of November, starting at 12.30. Please mark this date on your calendar. We would love to see at least one parent from every family attend this working bee please, but if you are unable to attend, let Vaughan know and he will give you a job to do at a time that best suits you. Please ring Vaughan if you need to know what tools you will be required to bring along. Hope to see you all then.

Whanau Group Action Project Reports
We will start building the shade house at the working bee this Thursday. We would be really grateful if you could come down and help. We have found that the Growing Unit is good for seedlings but is too small once trees get established. We need an area for them to be transferred to so that they can grow bigger and harden up before they get planted in the bush.
- From the Plant Experts.

We have our hydroponics unit set up and it is going well. We would like to thank Mr Sandford for all of his expertise and the time and energy that he has put into helping us! We have learnt a lot from him. Thanks also to Mr & Mrs Dearlove and Richard McCrae for their time and help in setting our unit up. On Friday we planted the plants. To plant them we needed to get the strength of the food solution right. Before we planted the plants we washed all the dirt of their roots then placed them into a small container and filled it up with hydroponics mix. We put them in the hole in the gullies and they were away. You are welcome to visit anytime to see how our Sustainable Enterprise is going. At the working bee, we would like to put a shed up by the glass house with a sink in it. - By the Hydroponic Experts.

Our group is the Action for Health group. On Thursday at the working bee we are going to be re-designing and changing the P.E. shed. The reason for this is because the P.E.Shed is not very functional and it is hard to keep it tidy. We will be lining the walls with plain board so that it is tidy and easy to attach storage. Our next step is to build shelves to store most of our equipment and barrels and hooks for the rest of it. The P.E.Shed must be completely empty for this. We will have the wood and nails but will appreciate help with the building.
From Karen - On behalf of the Action for Health group.

We have now cleaned out the paper shed. We have made signs marking what each bin is for and we have got all the paper off the ground and bagged it. We are currently looking at ways to send our paper and card to be recycled.
The pig scraps are not going to the pigs any more. They are now going to the worms in our new worm farm. Worms can not eat Citrus, onion peel or meat. Our worm farm is positioned in the shade by the tanks.
By The Recyclers.

This Thursday we aim to build our herb garden. We have designed a wagon wheel layout. If anyone has extra sleepers (smaller rather than larger) that we could use for this, we would appreciate it.
Thanks on behalf of the Herbalists.

Swimming Lessons
The last of the swimming lessons for 2009 will be held this Friday the 20th of November. Please refer to Parent Notice 9/11/09 for the transport list for this Friday. Swimming accounts will be sent home in the very near future.
Many parents and instructors comment on the fantastic progress many of the children are making during these lessons. The pool staff are impressed with the motivation and commitment of the students to improve their swimming skills.
The free time between our lessons provides a great opportunity for students to practice what they have learnt, build on skills relating to others and co-operating. Many students have challenged themselves in the big pool. This is both empowering and helps develop water confidence. These skills are integral to water safety in our local rivers and water ways.
Thank you to all parents for supporting this very worthwhile exercise and those who help out with transport. These yearly lessons are greatly improving the swimming skills of our students and it is hoped they will build on these swimming skills over the holidays, so that we can reap the benefits at the Oroua swimming sports being held next March.
Junior Small Ball Day
Thank you to all those parents who helped with transport to and from Kiwitea. It was a great day with the junior students gaining a lot of ball skill, co-operation and social knowledge. Thank you to Kiwitea School for hosting this event.

School Photo Album
This photo album has arrived and is available in the office for you to browse over. Order forms are enclosed in the front of the album for you to fill out.

Assembly
Thank you to all those who attended assembly last Friday. It is great to have such great parent support. Our next assembly will be held on Tuesday the 15th of December starting at the earlier time of 2.15. Hope to see you then.

Thank You
A huge thank you to Vaughan for attending to the plumbing troubles we have had recently – all seems to be working fine now.

A huge thank you too, to Mrs. Lesley Ayers (Katherine Gillespie’s Mum) for donating a years subscription of the ‘Kidz’ Magazine to our school. This magazine is full of interesting topics such as animals, crafts, hobbies, puzzles, facts, competitions and games. Our students should enjoy this magazine very much.

Grant / Donation
We were delighted to receive recently a cheque for $500.00 from the Thomas George MaCarthy Trust. We will utilise this donation in the library for either library books or computerisation of the library.
We also received a cheque for $50.00 from the National Bank. The National Bank sends us a cheque for $50.00 every year towards our Lamb and Calf Day.
We are indeed grateful to both the MaCarthy Trust and the National Bank for their very kind donation.

Athletics / Lunchtime Running
With the Oroua Group Athletics happening at the end of this month, our focus is on fitness and preparation. The senior room students and any junior room students that are keen, will be going for a run with Nicki every Monday and Thursday during lunchtime, starting at 12.30. Parents are most welcome to join in. We would like students to bring suitable clothes (not jeans) every day for running, fitness and athletic activities.
Oroua Group of Schools Athletics – Friday 27th November
This event is to happen on Friday the 27th of November (pp date: 4th December). For these Oroua Athletics, you will need to be at Timona Park by 9.45 so students are ready to assemble before the 10a.m start. (Timona Park is off Simon St, which is the second on the left past the North End BP station on Kimbolton Road). All students participate in this event. Students need to wear their school uniform for the day please. All students need to take their lunch, plenty to drink, a hat and sunscreen. There will be plenty of food available for purchase on the day. The playground and river are out of bounds to all children at all times!!! Parents please make sure that this is emphasised to your children that they must stay away from these areas until the completion of the day and until the children are in your care.
The juniors (5,6 & 7 year olds), will be dismissed at lunchtime (from 11.30 onwards) and then become the responsibility of their parents or caregivers.
The day is expected to conclude at about 2:30pm for the senior students. However this is only a guide and parents should return to the park early in-case the programme finishes early. Senior students lunch break is from 12.05 to 12.35.
Parents will need to provide transport for their own children and the bus will not run at all on this day. If transport is difficult, please contact the school. If this event is postponed due to weather conditions, an announcement will come over the radio from 7am onwards and the phone tree will operate. St John’s Ambulance will be in attendance. Parents are asked to help with the events our school is responsible for (senior high jump and junior ball throw), so please make yourself available during the day to help out with these events.

Pet Days – 1st & 2nd December
As most of you know we are planning to have a fun pet day at the end of this term. We have been discussing this event in our class meetings. We think that it would be a huge learning curve for every one!
The dates that we have set are the1st and 2nd of December. The 1st being for smaller animals such as:
Guinea pigs, Cats (in cages only), rabbits, fish (if you can organise them), mice, rats. And the 2nd for bigger
animals e.g. dogs, horses, lambs, calves. If you would like to, you can bring a pet to each day.
It will be up to parents to cart the animals to and from school. We will start at 9.00 am so that it will give parents and children the choice whether to keep their pet at school all day or to take them home after the sharing.
We will allow each child to have a say on how they look after their pet.
This is what we thought we would learn from it…
- Lamb and Calf Day involves short term caring for animals. This is great as everyone gets to have a pet but other animals require an ongoing commitment. - Students can share how to care for their pet. - Students can take responsibility for training their pet and demonstrate this. - Socialisation for animals. - Gives all students an opportunity to mix with and get exposed to a range of pets. - May encourage others to try new pets. Emma Wills - Class president

Board of Trustee Meeting – 10th December.
The next Board of Trustee meeting will be Thursday night the 10th of December, starting at 7.00p.m in the staff room. All members of the public are most welcome to attend.

Lamb and Calf Day stories, by Junior room children.

When we were working really hard for lamb and calf day everyone made a leaf plate and a vase out of pottery. My vase has two big orange teeth and the body is all blue. The hair is green. My leaf plate was two leaves stuck together. For my topic I wrote about black berries and I drew a big black berry with pastel. David did the same as me because he drew a big spider web on the back ground. I made a half of lemon out of paper and it was called a collage. We made a paper mache bowl. Mine was blue with cars on it and it had Spiderman in the middle and on the sides.
On the day of Lamb and Calf day Dad arrived at school and I rushed to get my beautiful lamb Bella out of the truck and just when I was leading Bella into the gate everyone was crowding around her. I walked to the ring and when it was time for the lambs to walk into the ring Bella was excited to see all of the other lambs. She was running all round the ring because she was trying to talk to the lambs. Bella won first prize for leading. Bella didn’t come to me for calling because I hadn’t practiced at home. I really liked the fancy dress up. I dressed Bella up in Dads headgear and my Oroua Rugby shirt and socks. Everyone was laughing about her. I liked Jacobs lamb because it could not get up and it looked funny. At the end everyone raced off to see what they got for the hard work done in the classroom. When we walked inside with our parents the first thing I ran to was my killer whale. I won 1st prize for it. The body was made out of a big Zucchini, the fins were carrots and the mouth and tail were pumpkin. The blow hole was a spring Onion. I thought it looked awesome and everyone said they liked it too. We went and looked at the senior room work. I didn’t think they would do such good work.
After something to eat we got our things and Bella and went home. I told Bella she was good and I played around with her. We both liked Lamb and Calf Day. By Huntah.
………………………………………………………………….

It was Lamb and Calf Day. I made my miniature farm. It looked good. I used grass, hay and animals from home. I had cows, pigs, donkeys, horses and a ram.
I made my vegetable animal. It was a rat. I made a play dough sheep. I made a paper mache bowl. It was blue with cars on it.
I made a table centrepiece decoration. I put flowers and leaves and a candle in the middle. My lamb is called Jump a lot. He got a rosette for calling.
I dressed up Jump a lot in Ninja Turtle clothes. He looked good and he tried to jump over people and kick them. Lamb and calf day was fun. By Travis.
…………………………………………………………………

My Lamb Lucy is dead. My new lamb is Luke. I fed him twice a day. My lamb wasn’t so good this year. I got one rosette for Care and Attention.
I liked doing my pottery because I like getting messy. I liked my paper mache bowl. I stuck robots on it.
In the morning I made my play dough sculpture. I made a rabbit eating a carrot. I got first prize for my table decoration. It had strawberries, grapes, flowers and leaves . It had a candle in the middle.
My vegetable animal was a sheep. It was a cauliflower with asparagus legs. It fell over so we laid it down. Lamb and calf day was exciting. By Ben.

……………………………………………………………..

I brought my lamb. Oscar. He came to me at calling. I walked Oscar around the circle. When I dressed my lamb up he lay down on the grass because he was too hot. When he saw the milk for the drinking race he hopped up drank fast. I liked doing the work the classroom in the morning. I made a vegetable decoration I used a pumpkin with a candle and Rosemary. I made my miniature scene too. I liked making my pottery leaf and my SpongeBob vase.
I liked lamb and calf day. Dad said he liked every thing that I made.
Mum said she liked it too. By Jacob McD.
