Monday 14th September 2009.
Welcome to week 9 of term 3, 2009. Gosh! Only 2 weeks of term 3 left!! Where does the year go?

Mt Ruapehu Ski Trip
Wow what a fantastic day! The weather was fantastic, the support from parents was fabulous and the effort from our students to learn on the slopes was great to see.
We would like to say a very big thank you to Mary for all the guidance, patience, enthusiasm and help she gave the junior children on the ski slopes. Mary had every junior up and skiing on their own by the end of the day – she may even have planted the seed for a future Winter Olympic skiing competitor. Thank you Mary on behalf of the students, parents and Board of Trustees.
Weed Buster Day
A huge, huge thank you to all those parents (Jo & Richard, Vaughan, Malcolm, Mervyn & Yvonne, Jock, Lance, Kathleen & Miles), who braved the icy wind and the snow showers to help out on our weed buster day held on Friday the 4th of September. Senior students took responsibility for organising our needs and support for our bush day.The students are developing their areas well and the whanau groups are focussed on what they need to achieve before we welcome others to share in our bush learning which is on 3 levels : 1) It allows students to develop language, writing, numeracy and understanding real contexts. 2) Apply this learning to make a difference in our world and 3) Consolidate learning by sharing with and by teaching others. Opportunities of authentic contexts are widely used at our school to motivate and as a learning / teaching tool. You will see the results of this written up at our Lamb & Calf Day.
Oroua Soccer
Thank you to all who provided transport and who supported their children at the Oroua Soccer Day held at Kimbolton Domain. It was a great opportunity for students to practice and build on team work and co-operation skills with all other Schools. We learnt lots of new skills and found some old and new friends from the Oroua Schools. Well done to everyone who displayed good sportsmanship and skill especially Tom, Chevelle, Ethan, Cole & Oliver. Many thanks to Jock for his time, expertise and coaching.
Junior student comments : Hannah, Charlotte & Travis liked playing soccer with the big exercise ball. Ben liked the soccer game, it was fun. Huntah & Keanu enjoyed scoring goals in the soccer game. Hayley & Brooke enjoyed kicking the big ball – it doesn’t go too far and it went right over people.
Board of Trustee Meeting – 22nd September

Oral Language
The juniors are further developing their Oral Language through the following programme :-Monday ; Weekend Stories: Share a weekend event / happening with the class.

Thursday ; Buddy: Students will talk to a buddy about a topic of interest e.g. farming, food, family etc. The buddy tells the class. This is to develop listening and speaking. If the student can talk about a topic at home before school, this will help.
Friday ; We will be doing poetry and group speaking.
Hypertoofa Pots
Could we please ask for volunteers to help us with hypertoofa pots next Monday or Tuesday or on a day which suits. Please ring Mary if you are able to help out. It will require skills for using a concrete mixer.
Rugby
Congratulations to Caleb K who will represent Apiti at the 10 a-side rugby match against Colyton held at Rangiwahia this Wednesday. We look forward to hearing all about it from Caleb.
Lamb and Calf Day
A reminder to mark Wednesday the 21st of October on your calendar. We would like to encourage all students to participate on this day by bringing along a lamb or a calf. Remember that if you have difficulty sourcing a lamb to ring Mary. We hope you are all spending time with and feeding your lamb or calf as caring for a living animal is a part of the science curriculum. We suggest that calves and lambs are born on or between 1/07/09 and 23/09/09.We welcome families, friends, neighbours and relations to the school for this day.
School Photos
School photos are booked with Quickpix Photography for Tuesday the 27th of October.
Swimming Lessons
Each year at Apiti School, we take the whole school into the Feilding Makino Pool for swimming lessons. We have developed a plan for our students in conjunction with the National swimming advisers and coaches and the Makino Pool staff, to action a swimming programme which will give the students the best opportunities to learn to swim and water safety.
The students have a swimming lesson at 10.15 and then a break and their second swimming lesson at 12.00 till 12.30. After that they are able to practise what they are learning.
Students will be assessed and taught in ability groups.
The dates for swimming lessons are :- 23rd & 30th of October and the 4th, 11th & 20th of November.
More information and transport slips will be sent home closer to the time.

Regards, Mary, Nicki, Mary B, Pat, and Christine.

Student Learning Stories

The Family Day at The Ski Trip
Dad jumped out of bed and woke Emma and I up. Then I took my clothes by the heater in the bathroom. I wriggled into my warm clothes. We hopped into the car and away we go. We got to Mount Ruapehu. I got there and the sun was up. I went super fast down the hill. I knew the water was snow and it was going to be fun skiing down from the top. At the next level it was fun when I did it. I went on the sled with Charlotte, Ash, Brooke and Hayley. It was slippery and bumpy with heaps of rocks. Brooke was a steerer one time and Ash steered and Hayley and I had a go too. By Hannah.

The Ski Trip
On the 8/9/2009 the School travelled to Mt Ruapehu and it took us about two hours to get there. We stopped at Ohakune for morning tea and a little play. After that we all drove up to the mountain and the men who helps get the ski and snowboard gear gave our gear to us. I walked outside and put my skis on and skied really fast down the hill and I just about crashed into Jacob MacD. I jumped on the magic carpet and took a long time to get up to the top. After a while Mrs Fielder took me up Park Lane and I skied down and Mum and Dad didn’t believe me when I skied down Park Lane. Then Zarn, Dad, Paul, Cody, and I went up the Giant and it was scary.

Logan’s Rugby Day
I quickly put my rugby boots on and then jumped into the car and dad drove off. We were late because Hayley was going to spew, she was going to be car sick. We played every team except Canada. We played six games. The coach gave me Player of the Year. Huntah's certificate was for outstanding sportsmanship. Dad thought that Huntah would get Player of the Year like me. I ran as fast as I could to score 10 tries, but I did not get 10, I scored 7. It was a great day at rugby and it was a good sports season. By Logan

Ski Trip
I sprinted out of the car and quickly got into my snow suit. I walked along the road in between the cones. Oops. I walked into a cone I started to run, I was so excited. Mrs Cuming gave us a pass. We walked inside and got our boots and skis on. We were off like a rocket, Kate took me down to my lesson, she let go of me. I tried to do pizza but my ski wouldn't stop so I fell over and then Jo helped me up. Then I went on the pommel I skied up to the pommel , Gemma and Ash helped me when I fell off. I held on to the pommel and it pulled me up the hill. At the end Gemma told me when to take the seat off and then Gemma pulled me over, so I wouldn’t get hit on the head, like I did the first time.
I skied to the magic carpet, I stood on it, but it stopped a lot so I fell over some of the times. I skied off, Brooke and her Mum were behind me so I waited for them and then we skied down again. Brooke skied in between her Mum’s legs and I skied by myself. I skied as fast as a rocket, we stood on the magic carpet again to go up, and ski off down again. This time Brooke skied by herself, but she fell over, so her Mum helped her up and then when we had enough of skiing we got a sled and our gumboots and we were off !! Wahoo!
We had a great day I hope we go again next year. By Charlotte.

Skiing
I went to the snow. I went skiing. I went down the hill. I went fast. I went down backwards. I went down sideways. I had fun skiing. By Derek.
