Welcome to week 10 of term 2, 2015 and only 2 weeks of term 2 left. Everyone is working very hard to prepare for the production.

As this is the last blog/newsletter for the term, we'd like to wish our supportive Apiti School learning community a great and safe holiday!   We look forward to seeing you all again on Monday the 20th of July at 9.00a.m.

Farewell

We would like to say farewell to Travis and Derek Clarke. We wish them and their parents well. We will have a shared lunch for the Clarke family on the last day of term - Friday the 3rd of July at 12.30. Could each family please provide a plate of food to share 

Oroua Schools Cross Country

Well yes it was wet and it was muddy but it wasn't cold and so it was fantastic to see all of our students

attend the cross country.  Their commitment was outstanding and each and everyone did Apiti School and themselves very proud!  Their support for one-another was awesome to see as it also was from our wonderful parents who transported, stayed, supported and cheered not only for their own children, but for all of our students.

Congratulations to all our students who performed extremely well and finished the race:-

At the Oroua Cross country I have come 1st four years now.  It was muddy, rocky, slippery, tiring, bushy, cold, amazing, swampy.  I also got stuck on the barbwire. It was very tricky and hard to keep going. There was a competition for the best mud slider and Tyler, Huntah, Fisher, Dylan, Cameron went in the competition and they got mud from head to toe and they all got a free sausage and then Kirsten got all muddy and got a free sausage and she gave it to Brooke.  -  By Sarah.

What's coming up ... 
Rugby League Day - Tuesday 30th June
This event is for the Year 4 to Year 8 students and will take place at Victoria Park Feilding. We will need transport help on this day, so please contact Nicki if you are able to help out.
A note from the organiser, Ebony:

It is exciting to have our first Keen Kiwi League Tag tournament for the Oroua Cluster confirmed for Tuesday 30^th June 2015, Victoria Park, Feilding.

Games will start at 9.30, so teams are asked to be ready to go on the hooter please.

There will be toilet facilities available at the fields.

Teams are asked to provide their own kai, water bottles and wear appropriate PE gear, warm clothes for in between games and suitable shoes for the games (running shoes or touch boots).

Footrot Flats Production
Thanks to everyone who is helping with the production of Footrot Flats. Classroom programmes will be modified slightly as we head into the last week of practice for our annual production. Oral, written and visual language, drama, movement and art are emphasised through this. We are also providing a valuable learning opportunity to develop self management, relating to others and participating in and contributing to our school. We would appreciate it if you could set aside a little time to discuss your child's costume plans with them and support them where required. Students are expected to complete homework as normal. Please talk to Mary or Nicki if you have any questions.  
The Production will take place on Thursday the 2nd of July starting at 6.30pm in the senior room.  We would like all students to arrive by 6.15 please.  The evening will conclude with supper in the staff-room. We look forward to seeing you all here on the 2nd of July, including all members of the community who are most welcome.
The Production Dress Rehearsal will be held on Wednesday the 1st of July, starting at 10.30am.  Other Oroua Schools have been invited to attend and we would also welcome any parent with pre-school age children who would like to attend this dress rehearsal.

Holiday Learning 

All students have library and reading level books to read in the holidays. Plus passwords for Mathletics, Sumdog, Reading Eggs, Spelldrome and Study Ladder. Please make the most of these, for learning in the holidays.  

School Holidays

School will close on Friday the 3rd of July at 2.30pm for the school holidays and will reopen on Monday the 20th of July at 9.00am.  A reminder that school will finish at 2.30 every Friday during term 3.

Sports Reports - 13/6/2015

Netball

Our team won 12- 6. I got 1 goal I was WD and GA I love being GA. We played Manchester street. Laura was player of the day she got a chocolate fish. The team got fruit bursts. I got 3. We played really well we all worked together and passed the ball down to our goal. I can’t wait till Saturday I hope we win again. - By Lauren 

At netball I played ga and gk. We didn’t win but Kirsten and I had fun. - By Josie.

It was a tie we both scored 1 all. Jayda got player of the day. I was C and GA. We played Manchester Street. Jayda was GK and WA. - By Phinece!!!

Rugby

On Saturday I played Johnny’s team it was so close. One minute we were down one end of the field then the other until Ethan scored in the corner. Then Jake scored, Nick scored a double straight after then I got a field try Kiare scored on half time. After half time Nick scored again and then Johnny got the ball in the lineout and passed to the halfback and got the ball and down went the big man in my team and Johnny was free to score. Then I got a birthday gift from Nick. He passed me the ball when he was over the line. At that point the score was 5-6 to my team, we scored a great try and then Kiare scored again. With one minute to go we went up and got a penalty with ten seconds to go I took the ball and tapped the ball, I ran up and stepped three and scored right on the hooter. Mitchell got player of the day. - James.

Cross Country

Oroua Schools Cross Country - Friday 19th June

The Oroua Group of School Cross Country will be happening this Friday the 19th of June (postponement date : Thursday 25th June) at Waituna West School.  Postponement will happen only if the weather is atrocious.  As this is a school day, all children are expected to attend. Students need to arrive at Waituna West by 10.00am to walk the course (with guides).

The first race starts at 11.00 with the 7 year old students running a distance of 1.4 klms.

11.15 - 8 year olds (1.4 klms).

11.30 - 5 year olds (600 meters).  

11.45 - 6 year olds (600 meters).    

12.00 - 9 year olds (2.2 klms).    

12.15 - 10 year olds (2.2 klms).      

12.30 - 11 year olds (2.8 klms).      

12.45 - 12+ year olds (2.8 klms).

Boys and girls will run together but will be recorded separately.  Certificates will be presented after each race.  The course could be muddy and there will be some water to negotiate for the older children, so please make sure they take a change of footwear and warm clothes as they may get wet and muddy. Students run in the age group that they are on the day.  Parents are welcome to watch runners on the course as long as you keep off the track and out of the way of competitors, it is not suitable to run with your child but you may like to be by the fence to help all students over.   

Students will need to wear their sports uniform including black shorts please, and take a good packed lunch, or money to buy it, warm clothing e.g beanie, jacket, suitable footwear for running in and maybe wet weather gear.  This event is a winter event, so be prepared.

Parents are required to transport their own children to this event, however if you have difficulty with this, please contact Mary a.s.a.p.  The bus will not run at all on this day.  It is great to see so many Apiti parents at this event every year supporting our students.  If parents do not stay to support the runners, please make sure you return in time for pick up at 1.30pm.  If the event is postponed which would be very unusual, the phone tree will operate and it will be school as usual. 

There will be sausages/small savouries/soup/slices/hot drinks/cold drinks for sale throughout the day. If you require further information, please don't hesitate to ring the school.  Will see you all there.

For those who do not know where Waituna West School is :  Travel to Cheltenham and turn right at the Chelty Hotel, follow the main Road (turn right at the top of the steep hill) and keep going until you reach a small village at which point you turn right just before crossing the bridge (at the bottom of a hill) and you will then see the school on your right, park up and walk on in.  Driving to Waituna West should take you about 40 / 45 minutes from Apiti Village.

Welcome to week 8 of term 2, 2015 and only 4 weeks of term 2 left, but 4 very busy weeks, with lots of learning both in and out of the classroom. The cross country and the production both happening within those 4 weeks!!

Welcome
We would like to say a very big welcome to Cidnee and her family to our school and district.  Cidnee joins us as a Year 2 student.  We know Cidnee will enjoy learning at Apiti School and we are looking forward to her younger sister joining us later in the year.   

What's coming up ... 

Cross Country 
All students are training well for the cross country, please give some thought to footwear, as there are creeks for the older students to go through and thistles and stones. Students should be training in the footwear they expect to wear at the cross country. If you would like to organise a practise run on the course before the day please let us know. 
Congratulations to Huntah who competed in the Interschool cross country at Ashhurst recently.  Huntah finished a very admirable 18th place out of a field of 80+ runners from schools in the wider Manawatu / Horowhenua area. Excellent result Huntah!

Footrot Flats
The students are working hard towards our annual Production. All students should now know their words. We are needing an old small water tank and sheep and dog onesies or light sheep skin mats if you have any we could borrow.  We also need white or black tights, white or black long sleeve skivvies and some old stockings/panty-hose for the sheep to wear.  It would be very much appreciated if you could send any of the above along to school a.s.a.p please so that we know what we have or still need to get.  Also if anyone has any suitable old Footrot Flat books we could borrow, it would be great!

6/6/2015 - Netball - We played against a really hard team and we lost it was 0-5. Jayda was GK and WA and GS and Phinece was GK and GA. It was wet and hard. - Jayda.
6/6/2015 - We got the closest to the goal, but we didn't score a goal, and neither did the other team. I play for the Oroua Tigers. - Kirsten.

6/6/2015 - We got 13 they got 0 points we won I was Centre, goal shoot, goal defence. Hayley was the player of the day, we got a packet of lollies. - Sarah.
6/6/2015 - My Team is Bunnythorpe. We play 4 quarter games. We won 19-4. I shot about half of the goals!  - Hannah.

30/5/2015 - Rugby - On Saturday my team played Auckland the score was something like 14-6. I scored 2 tries for my team and one for the other because I played the second half for the opposition. It was as fun as riding on a giant roller coaster in Paris. - James.

6/6/2015 - My team Waikato won and I scored three tries but my fourth wasn’t counted because it was in over time. - James.

6/6/2015 - On Saturday we went to rugby and we faced the Counties team. I did not like the counties they were doing high head tackles and kicking me when I got tackled and we lost for the second time. Then I got player of the day. It was so cold and after half time it warmed up. - Johnny.

25.5.2015 - Last Saturday we played rugby for the Feilding Blues. We lost but it was very close. The score was 35 - 30 and I scored 3 tri’s, Tyler scored 2 tries. - Dylan.

8.6.2015 - In the weekend we played rugby. We were playing another Feilding team. We lost. We were not happy because we only got one try. One time I got the ball and I ran but I got tackled and I passed the ball to Tyler and he kicked me by mistake. Next time I am going to try to score a try. - Jackson.

23/5/2015 - The 2015 high school grading games took place at Coronation Park in Palmerston North. Many teams from all over the district showed up to all play three games each in competition the best spot in the grade. Our first game was played against Wanganui Under 15’a team. With very strong competition, the boys fought strong together just to come short to lose by 15 - 12. Game two played out with our old rivals College Old Boys. A very big score rounded up to us winning 42 - 10.     
Our last game was against one of the PNBHS Under 14 teams. A long anxious game it was and all the boys were starting to feel the long tired day. Try after try it was until the final whistle of the final game blew. 28 - 7 saw us win after three long games of strong fast rugby.  - Huntah. 6/6/2015 - Timona park held the 4th game of the 2015 season, where the Feilding Under 14's took on the under 13/14 PNBHS team. A hard fought game ended with my team winning by 86 points to 5. Huntah scored twice. - Huntah.
Girl Guides - Week 4 - At guides this week we did mothers days gifts. We made bracelets, lip balm, bath bombs, mini pizzas and ANZAC cookies. We had to share the cooking room with the scouts who looked like they were just putting handfuls of bacon, lettuce and baked beans in a large pot. - Nikki.    
Maths Rich Task - Soup Challenge

Many thanks to all parents who discussed these with your children and provided some ingredients to help make it happen!

8/6/2015 - LAST WEEK WE DID OUR SOUP CHALLENGE. FIRST WE GOT OUR RECIPES

THEN WE CALCULATED HOW MUCH STUFF WE NEEDED AND THEN WE MADE OUR SOUPS. THERE WERE FOUR GROUPS, HUNTAH’S HANNAH'S, NIKKI’S AND MINE.
HANNAH MADE MINESTRONE, HUNTAH MADE PEA & HAM, NIKKI’S GROUP MADE CHICKEN CURRY SOUP AND MY GROUP MADE A CHICKEN NOODLE SOUP. - FISHER. 

For our soup challenge we made pea and ham soup. Huntah, James, Jackson and I made it. It tasted really good. It turned out really good ... better than I thought it would. Everyone in our group liked it and everyone in the school. By the time we had finished our run it was basically finished because it was so good. I hope next time we can do a pizza challenge but it was really nice . - Tyler

We made chicken and noodle soup. In the soup we put egg noodles and they went all squishy so the juniors didn’t like it. Apart from the noodles it was good and all of the seniors liked it. Our soup had lots of herbs and spices. When making our soup I learnt about the importance of teamwork. It helped me with my timetables because we had to times the recipe by 5 to get enough for the whole school. Next time we will use different kinds of noodles. - Dylan. 

Fungal Foray Thank you!

Together we made just over $3000, admittedly it did take a lot of work to make our money! 

Thank you so much for everyone who did something for the meals.  Every little thing helped!

We couldn't have done it without the kids helping! 

What a cool way for them to meet new people and experience things outside of their world.

At the beginning the catering was about the money. 

By the end of the week the money was still important but I think there was a lot more gained by taking this job on.

• Our children's lives were enriched. They were part of the week, cooking, serving meeting new people and they experienced looking at our area from a different perspective! This is invaluable life learning. 

 We showed how a small rural community works, with everyone pitching in to help out!

 Not all schools have this, big or small. 

• Working together meant that we connected with each other on a different level to everyday life.
• It was fun working with you and it reminded me that we need to do more together outside of work and school. 

The week was not without its stresses and I certainly learned a lot from the week!

I hope that everyone involved found it beneficial to be on board the team!

2015 MCA Winter Coaching Programme

The Manawatu Cricket Association continues to provide a comprehensive Winter Coaching Programme to help develop our junior cricketers to their full potential. The winter programme are being offered to all junior cricketers starting the first week of Term 3 and running for 10 weeks. Cost is $140 for ten 1 and a half hour sessions.

U12 Monday 20th 5pm-630pm. Spots available

U12 Tuesday 21st 5pm-630pm FULL.

If your child is still 11 or younger before the 1^st of September he or she will be in the U12 group.

The winter programme is specifically designed to help players develop their batting, bowling, and fielding skills appropriate to their ability and age. The courses are run by experienced, fully qualified coaches who will provide a fun environment to develop your cricket skills.

All sessions will be at the NZCT Cricket Centre on Park Road. Book in quick as spots are already filling up fast. Bookings and info please contact michaelmason@mca.org.nz
