School Assembly
There will be assembly this Friday the 4th of June in the senior room starting at 2.00pm. All members of the community are most welcome to attend this assembly.
The Green Rig
Anastiasia and I giggled from school to the river then we jumped out of Mrs Brown's car and walked to the stony river. Wipe-out as I fall down on my bottom. The slippery rocks made me just about fall down again. First we got into groups, I was with Nastia, Chevelle, Cole and Logan. My group did the measuring. First we put the thermometer in the water. Next we put the ironiser in the water to see how good the temperature is, it was excellent. Then we put our eye in the clarity tube to see how far you could see. Then it was time to change activities. We did the one when you caught little water insects and sorted them out. I got one of the nets first and Nastia had the other net. I caught a heap of water insects. Nastia caught a cockabully. We went on sorting them until we went for a walk with Mrs. Brown. Mrs. Brown threw a stick into the river to see how fast it went, it went very fast. It was just about time to go back to school, but first we had a talk about how important water is. I found out it is very important. Then we drove back to school. I thought that it was a fun day. - By Charlotte.

Herb garden
The herb garden is getting strawberries planted and a trim soon. By Ethan
Plant Experts
Last week we sold 12 hebe plants. We still have 34 hebe plants and 10 Kowhai left to sell. The Kowhai are $4.00 and the Hebe plants are $3.00 each or 5 for $10.00. The hebe plants make good hedges. Thanks to all of the parents and community members who have supported us. A special big thank you to Mrs. Beard. - By Jacob.
Hockey
On behalf of the senior room we would like to thank Vaughan and Kate for taking time out of their busy lives to help us learn some hockey skills. We would like to give a huge thanks to Vaughan for being our team coach.
We got 4th= out of the whole tournament. We all really enjoyed it. - By Ashleigh

Wearable Arts

Last Wednesday we had Rei Hendry come to work with us on our Wearable Arts. It was really helpful. She showed us how to be creative ... not that we weren't already!! But it got our minds truly thinking about it rather than just drawing it on paper. It actually had to be wearable and 3D. We really enjoyed taking our plans one step further and creating our masterpieces. It was loads of fun!! - By Nastia and Emma
Blue Duck Project
A huge thanks goes to Jock Bielski and Jim Warren who have placed traps on local farms in the last week. Students will be involved in the next step; recording the GPS location of each trap. We would also like to thank the farmers involved for their commitment to try and enhance the Blue Duck population. They have all agreed to check these traps and record their findings. We really do appreciate this.
Closing time
At the recent Board of Trustees meeting, the school day times were discussed. A survey will be held before the end of the term to gauge opinions. This will include the opinions of parents, students and staff. If you would like to help with writing the options for the survey please contact the school. We are trialling 2.30 closing all this term.
Pottery
On 8th June Miss Smith will be doing pottery at Apiti School. We will be making jugs this year. The students should have a design and use for the jug in mind before this date. We are very lucky to be able to use her skills and expertise. Miss Smith also fires our pottery for us so it is safe to use in the oven , dishwasher etc.
Recycling & Rubbish
Kimbolton Transfer Station is open from 10 - 4 every Saturday. This is available for general rubbish and recycling. The students are clearing our school shed soon. We appreciate all cans as we sell these as a fund raiser.
Student Achievement
Please take the time to read the Report to the Annual Plan and Student Literacy Achievement Reports shared with the Apiti School Board of Trustees at our last meeting. We are extremely proud of the achievements of our students based on annual PAT testing. We are proud to say that all students are working at or above the expected level in literacy. It is the great support from parents and staff and especially the commitment by students. This has enabled such continued growth. We congratulate the students on their awareness of their strengths and personal learning goals and continued positive efforts to own their own learning, achieve and improve.
Cross Country
We are all training hard for the Oroua Cross Country, on 23rd June. Please make sure all students have approriate footwear and clothes to train everyday (shorts or shortish trackpants, these can be kept at school). As we noted last year the footwear most suitable to the Waituna track needs to be worn on stones, in mud and water, as well as on grass. We suggest they train in what they will be wearing on the day.
If anyone would like to come and train with the students, the seniors usually run at 11.55. It's great to hear some students are training in the weekend and after school too !

Rugby
"Wake up Logan, we want to beat the Beards to rugby". I zoomed to the kitchen and made my breakfast as fast as I could, and ate it in the car. We were suddenly there. The Beards were already there. We started passing around the ball and then 'Bang' it was time to start. We were playing France. We scored the first try and then it was half-time. 'Bang' time to start the second half. Off went our team ... the score was 6 - 5 when France dropped the ball on the try-line. I scooped it up and ran off without them. That was the second time I scooped it up. We won with the score at 10 - 9. Tyler & Kyle got the moro bar. Tyler and David were Player of the Day. - By Logan.

That's it for this week folks, will catch you again in a fortnight.

Hydroponic Experts

We are still growing our fruit and vegetables in the hydroponic unit. Tomorrow Mr. Sandford is coming to help us change the water and hopefully he will help us with planting our winter vegetables and herbs. We are going to grow celery, coriander and basil. We really appreciate Mr Sandford's support. - By Ashleigh

Recyclers
Our recycling is going really well. Our recycling centre is a little messy. While we have been taking out the paper we have noticed that it is getting harder to keep the shed tidy. The worms are doing well. We have begun to collect worm wee to use as fertiliser. We are lucky to have Neil coming on the 22nd to help us pick up the paper and take it to a local recycling centre. We will clean our shed. Our next step is to redesign the recycling centre and get more bins so that it is more efficient. We are pleased that we have only sent out one blue bag to be collected for the last 3 weeks. - By Chevelle.

Herbalists

We are currently working on a video to advertise our herbs and explain why they we have developed the herb garden and why we should use herbs. This will be published on the herbalist blog when it is completed. - By Ethan

Plant Experts

On Tuesday the 11th of May, we went to the bush. We learnt that the bush is like a house. We also learnt that our bush does not have any roof level trees. In our bush we have whitey wood which is a hard wood to make fire. At lunch time we put bait in all of the 5 bait stations. We still have native plants for sale. Kowhai plant = $4.00. Hebes = $3.00. Thank you very much Lance for organising all of the possum bait. We can see a little evidence of possums and it is great to get on top of them! - By Jacob.

Sport stars

Right now we are doing a movie explaining how being active is really important. We are showing how redesigning the sports shed has encouraged people to be more active at school. We think this is because it is easier to find the equipment we need. Senior students have been practising hockey every morning tea and lunchtime. We would like to thank Vaughan and Kate for helping us with our hockey training. - By Nastia

Oroua Group Hockey
This event is to take place this Friday the 21st of May (ppd Friday 28th May) at the Fitzherbert Park Hockey Turf, Manawaroa St, Palmerston North. Our Bush Outdoor Classroom comes to life

Last week all of the students from year 3 - 8 bought learning to life in our Outdoor Bush Classroom. This was Travis' reflection on his learning once we returned to school. The forest is like a big house. Some forests have two storey houses! Our forest is just a house without a roof level. That will grow after a lot of years! There are three different things a plant needs to grow. They are water, air and soil. They grow really big with these things. Some have big leaves and some have hot leaves like the Pepper tree. There is also a tree that is called a fire tree. If you want to make fire without matches, you just grab a little piece of wood from the two different trees and rub them together to make fire. There was a liittle stump that was really gooey and looks like jelly. It was used by the maori a long time ago, when they were wounded. it was like sticking plaster. The bush lawyer is a real pain too. It tries to kill other trees. I loved learning in our Bush Classroom because it was was really bushy and we could see how the trees grow. Some trees we could find spiders in and we saw some fungi ... even blue fungi and white fungi! - By Travis.

Bon Apiti

There has been a slight change to the healthy lunch programme. Instead of buying sushi by the piece, we will sell it for $2.50 for a whole roll and $1.50 for 1/2 roll. Pizza will stay the same at $1.50 for 1/4 piece. Thank you to the Dearlove, Knight, Ross and Bell families for the ingrediant donations and a huge thank you to Mrs. Fielder for the loan of her rice cooker. - By Emma.

Blue Duck
The Department of Conservation would like to put the report about our Blue duck, from when Jacob, Caleb K, Caleb J and Ethan walked up stream into Iron Gates to gauge the Blue Duck population, into this month's magazine. - By Ethan

Ramp update

We have received a letter from the Manawatu District Council about the ramps and they said that they would arrange someone from Fulton Hogan to come up to the school and see what is needed to be done and that they could help us to upgrade them or replace them. We are hoping to upgrade them. - By Cole

Staff Professional Development

Last week Mary and Nicki joined a group of teachers, invited by Brian Coles at Massey University, to delve into the issues surrounding National Standards. Also to discuss how we can best use these to keep parents informed, and enhance teaching and learning. It was a valuable opportunity which both allowed us to share our developments with others. It also confirmed to us that keeping you as parents up to date with how your child is progressing, by using an ongoing format such as a wiki space is one of the best reporting mediums and formats.

Movie Making with A.J.

Last week AJ came to teach us how to use the movie camera and make movies using Movie maker. Mrs Fielder and Mrs Cuming learnt about 'Blue Screening'. We will use this technique to make our movies. He helped my group to plan our movie based on a quiz show. - By Payten
Wearable Arts

Students are currently planning their wearable art based on the Maori Myths and legends that we have been studying in literacy. All students are planning a costume repsesenting one of the characters they have read about. These will be made at school over the next month. Finished articles will be showcased at the Oroua Wearable Arts afternoon. In keeping with our belief that all learning should have 'real' purpose and relevance, they will also become an integral part of our Annual Production and our sharing at the Oroua Cultural morning on the 12th of August.
We are lucky to have Rei Hendry, Art Advisor, working with our students on the initial stages of these this Wednesday. We have spent a lot of time discussing options and the practicalities of making these at school. It would be great however if you could allow your child some time to discuss their ideas with you at home. We have purchased a number of materials specifically to suit this learning opportunity. We also welcome any materials from home that you believe may be useful or suit your child's design. If you have any extra newspaper, could you please send it to school with your child as this has a number of uses. It is often best to start with a base such as an old shirt, skirt or trousers and then add and change this to enable the character to evolve. The recycled materials listed on the front page of our wiki are well suited to bring a piece of art to life. If you are able to help with sewing, hand or machine, and gluing etc, we would love to hear from you!

The Green Rig

Next Friday the 28th of May, the Green Rig visits our school for a learning programme about 'Water.' We are still planning the programme with Helen Brown from Horizons, and it will also be could change due to weather conditions, but at this stage, the whole school will be going down to the Oroua River or Coal Creek. Students will need to wear appropriate clothing e.g leggings, gumboots and also weather appropriate clothes. The students will have more about this later, which will be posted on the blog.
