Welcome
We would like to welcome Payten & Anja to our school. Payten is a year 4 student and Anja is a year 2 student. We know Payten & Anja will enjoy learning at Apiti School.
We have started term 2 with 24 students, 11 in the senior room and 13 in the junior room. We are looking forward to 1 new entrant starting this term.

Change in School Hours
Many schools have, or are now changing school hours to optimise learning and to make things easier for students and families. There are many reasons and some of these are that many of our students are involved in after school activities, which we fully support. In order for families to attend these it is often necessary to take students out of school early. This is one of the many reasons we have decided to close school at 2.30. Other reasons include making the most of daylight hours to further develop interests. Also the lunch hour is unnecessarily long when wet.
In-class time will remain the same and break times shortened. All students will remain seated to eat their morning tea and lunch before going to play. The food our students are given is very healthy and great energy food. We thank parents for this. We encourage a named water bottle (water may be brought from home if you wish, but our school water is perfectly suitable for drinking), which can be kept in the classroom. There will be an opportunity for a brain food break during the morning, so please continue to ensure your child is aware of what should be eaten during this time.
At a recent Board of Trustee meeting (29/03/2010), the board decided to trial the change in school hours for this term. From the 19th of April (today), school times will be as follows:-

School start time will remain at 9.00 a.m
Morning tea time from 10.30 – 11.00.
Brain food Break
Lunch time from 12.40 – 1.10
Home time at 2.30p.m.
We hope to receive feedback from parents after this trial period.

Board of Trustee Meeting
The next Board of Trustee meeting will be on Monday the 24th May, starting at 5.00p.m in the staff room. All members of the public are welcome to attend.

Bon Apiti 2010
We will be having Sushi on Mondays and Pizza on Wednesdays. If anyone has any ingredients that would be suitable, it would be very much appreciated! Thanks - The Bon Apiti Committee.

ANZAC DAY – Celebrating 80 years Apiti RSA.
ANZAC day is this Sunday the 25th of April.
The school will be supporting this by marching in the parade at 10.30. Please assemble at the garage by 10.15. We would hope all school age children can join us in this. Please wear your school uniform. If you are unable to attend for any reason please send a note to school. If your child needs transport to attend the event, please let us know.

Magazine
It was great to read the quality student writing in our camp magazine. This is excellent authentic reason for writing. Unfortunately, the senior student descriptive writing was not printed. These have been put together as an insert. It would be appreciated if you could return your magazine to school so this can be included. Students often like to look back at their writing in later years.

Please take a little time to scan down and look at our last newsletter blog entry. It has been updated with photos and videos to support student contributions!

Blue Duck
We have received a donation of $2005 to help with our work eradicating stoats. We really appreciate this. The aim of this is to allow the Blue duck population to rejuvenate. This term we will continue our learning as we check and monitor stoat traps, coordinate and work with DOC and inform others. We thank those who have helped us with this work. If you would like to help please contact us and we will give you more details.

Bush Visit – Friday 30th April
On Friday the 30th of April, the whole school (depending on the weather for the junior students), will be travelling up to our native bush area with the aim to re establish the tracks and clear weeds as the bush has become really over-grown with weeds. We will head up there at 12.30 after an early lunch. Students will need to wear warm protective clothing / shower proof jacket / leggings and suitable footwear e.g. gumboots, work-boots. If we could have your help it would be really appreciated, as we will need at least 1 parent per group for 5 groups. Please contact Mary or Nicki if you are able to help. We will also need supplied please, several tools for cutting down low lying branches and tools for pulling out the weeds. Students may also like to wear thick gardening gloves in case of prickly weeds. We will be back in time for the bus or we will drop students off on the way back.
This day was postponed last term due to the weather. We are expecting several interested visitors, to visit our bush block this term so we are really keen to spend some time up there getting it in shape.

Plates / Dishes
If you are missing a particular plate or dish, maybe it is sitting in our cooking room waiting to be collected. We have several here from either the Apiti show or the recent trail ride. Please feel free to come and have a look.
