Weed buster Day
Many thanks to the large number of parents who helped last Friday. Our goals were well achieved thanks to the amazing support by our
· we established the current status of the bush
· introduced parents and the new members of our school to their bush area and why it is special
· established a plan to re-establish the track, eradicate weeds and encourage native regrowth and birds to visit
· developed an action the plan
· we planned our bush presentations and next learning step.
We have a number of visitors to our bush this term and we are now a step closer to having an informative and educational outdoor learning centre. Each time we visit the bush, it becomes more established to suit this purpose; something the students are taking excellent responsibility for.
Our next step is for students to write and fine tune their presentations. In order to be effective they will need to consider the techniques they will use to keep their audience interested and suit all learning styles.
Students Thoughts on the Weed buster Day
Last Friday afternoon, the whole school went to see how the bush had grown over the school holidays. It was quite messy. Linda and I were starting to pull all the weeds out so we could see the track. Caleb K and his group were helping our group to reform the track into Emma's groups area. We cut all the trees that closed the way, pulled out all the weeds and tidied up the track. Our next step is to plan our teaching stations. - Nastia.
Brummm! as the loud chainsaw started up, stamp, stamp was the sound as we were pushing down the grass on the track. It was very hard to see the start of our track, it was so over grown. Jock slashed the branches and sliced the trees and diced the leaves. When we were half way, we heard rustling behind us, "Hello" said Mrs. Fielder "how are you doing there?" she said. She came with us and we carried on. David approached a tree. He ripped off some bark and Ash told David not to do that "sorry" said David and he put the bark back but it broke and fell down. We all laughed and then carried on. We approached some more grass - stamp! stamp!, we pushed it all down and we were done. Back I went in Mrs. Cuming's car, then we were all finished. - Cole.
Bon Apiti
Healthy lunches is back in full swing! We are selling sushi for $1.50 for 1/2 a roll and $2.50 for a whole roll. Pizza will be sold for $1.50 a piece. Students are able to buy sushi every Monday and pizza every Wednesday. The sushi went down well last week and so did the pizza, it was great to see some students trying new foods and enjoying them. A huge thank you to Chevelle, Keanu and their family and to Caleb J and his family for the awesome donations and Sara Wills for the sausages. We welcome any donations of ingredients. Thank you for your support.
- Emma on behalf of Bon Apiti committee.
BOT
The next Board of Trustee meeting will be held on Monday the 24th of May, starting at 5.00p.m. in the staff room. This is when we will welcome the new board members and farewell those members who did not stand for re-election. All members of the public are welcome to attend.
Hydroponic Experts
We are still growing tomatoes, chillies, peppers and lettuces which we are using in our healthy
Herbalists
Everyday we go out and water the plants. The plants are starting to die because it is the beginning of the winter season. We are going to prune them back so they can grow back in the summer. Our next step is to transfer the strawberry plants from the hydroponic house to the herb garden. - Ethan.
Recyclers
Our recycling system is working well. Each day after lunch, Chevelle and I carry out two boxes of paper to the paper shed and put the paper in the bins. We do this to be eco friendly. Recycling means litter can be reused. The next step to recycling the paper is to take the bin to the Kimbolton or Feilding recycle centre. - Tom.
Plant Experts
We are looking at planting some Hebes in the bush. We will call it the 'Hebe Mountain.' We will plant the hebes on a big pile of rotten rock. We have ten hebes to sell and we also have ten Kowhai to sell. The Kowhai are $5.00 each and the hebes are $3.00 each. If you are interested in puchasing any of these, please come down and ask for Caleb K or Jacob.
Our Integrated Learning - Production within the context of Myths and Legends
Myths and Legends provide a fantastic context for the production of visual, written and oral language. This includes through video, screen play, role play, claymation, photo story, writing, narration and acting.

Wearable Arts
As part of our integrated topic this term, we will be developing wearable art. This will be produced at school and presented at a Wearable Art Competition on the 16th of June. Our Wearable Art will be based on Maori legends. The scope within this is huge and students are currently thinking about possible wearable creations as they read legends as part of our literacy and personal reading. We will be discussing possibilities and learning construction techniques over the next couple of weeks. This is a great time to chat with your children about their artistic ideas and the practicalities of them. It would also be beneficial to save, and send to school, anything that may be suitable for a wearable artistic garment, or which can be used or re-modelled into a creative masterpiece. Recycled materials are fantastic. Below are some of the essentials that students may need to create the framework for their creation.
Materials list
Cardboard/corrugated card (packages), newspaper, strong paper (brown or cartridge), fabric (old sheets, towels, pillow-cases, tablecloths), rubbish bags / dog food bags, bailing twine, old clothing/hats/footwear/scarves (to be reshaped to fit new constructions), crepe paper/wallpaper/cellophane, found objects (purposeful) or purchased for decoration e.g paua shell, stones, beads, feathers, ribbons, tinfoil, old jewellery, belts, wigs etc.

Many students will also, at times, bring home extra homework tailored especially to enhance their learning. This sure is one of the benefits of smaller schools.
Sam Strahan Cup This is a Rippa Rugby team of largely year 7 and 8 students. They will play at the Manawatu Stadium against other schools (with less than 120 students) for the Sam Strahan Cup. Trials for this were held last Thursday. Congratulations to Caleb K for being selected for this team. Thanks to Jock for his continued commitment as the team coach.
Oroua Hockey
In preparation for the Oroua hockey tournament being held on Friday the 21st of May, the senior students will be practising for this every day whether as part of Fitness or our PE Programme. Please ensure that you are prepared every day with suitable PE gear. Many thanks to Vaughan who has offered to help with coaching.
Plates/Dishes
Just a reminder that there are still several dishes left over from the Apiti Show and the Trail ride to be picked up from school. Please do so at your earliest convenience.
