Power Problems
We apologise for not being able to send out the newsletter at all last week, but those jolly frequent power cuts we had last week made it impossible and then once the power supply was restored, our server packed up and we were unable to access our computer and printer. Every time we have a power cut at school, it does serious damage to our computer hardware / server. This has resulted in many thousands of $$$$$$$$ in repair bills, money which you need to fundraise for every year, money which should be spend on more important resources than on repair bills. We would like as many of our parents and community members to write to Genesis Energy to explain the impact these power outages / surges have on our student’s ability to learn at school when the computer system is down. You might like to also complain about the inconveniences caused concerning your own home appliances. Please let us know if you do write to Genesis.

Working Bee
Thanks to all of the parents who helped out at our recent working bee! We achieved a huge amount in an afternoon e.g. Shade house frame! Bench and sink for hydroponics! PE Shed lined and a shelf put in place for storage! Herb garden set up! Curbing removed and front garden prepared for sowing grass! Bark in playground turned over and revitalised! Guttering cleaned! Potting bags sorted and recycled!
The school looks extremely well cared for. This would certainly not have been achieved without your time and
commitment. Thanks especially to Vaughan for organising our working bee.

Participating and Contributing within Society
Our integrated topic this term is ‘Participating and Contributing within Society’. It was great to see students actively involved in improving and maintaining their learning environment. All students have set goals and reflected on the quality of their contribution in their e-portfolio. Opportunities to develop these skills are an important part of developing confident, connected, lifelong learners.
If you view our newsletter blog you will see several photos and video’s illustrating this topic.

Excerpt from the New Zealand Curriculum:-
Participating and contributing This competency is about being actively involved in communities. Communities include family, whānau, and school and those based, for example, on a common interest or culture. They may be drawn together for purposes such as learning, work, celebration, or recreation. They may be local, national, or global. This competency includes a capacity to contribute appropriately as a group member, to make connections with others, and to create opportunities for others in the group.
Students who participate and contribute in communities have a sense of belonging and the confidence to participate within new contexts. They understand the importance of balancing rights, roles, and responsibilities and of contributing to the quality and sustainability of social, cultural, physical, and economic environments.

Students Water Day
Each year, the senior students (‘Bon Apiti’ group) plan and organise end of year activities. This year, to celebrate their contributions to the school through healthy lunches, we will be having a range of activities at school. These activities will include water based activities, art and craft, technology and co-operative games. All supplies will be paid for from the student account. All students will not need to bring lunch, only morning tea. Students will need a change of clothes, towel, togs, a hat and sunscreen.

Whanau Group Action Project Report
At the recent working bee we set up our herb garden. Thank you to all those who helped us at the working bee. It has now been planted with lemon balm, parsley, tarragon, lavender, mint & chives. They are growing well and will soon be for sale. - Emma (Herbalists).

Thank You
A huge thank you to Richard McCrae for giving his time so freely to help us recently. Richard has spent time helping the ‘Action for Health’ group. The PE Shed now looks fantastic and should be a lot easier for students to use and keep organised. Our sheds are now all tidier and he has worked with students to put calf sawdust on our native area to help suppress the weeds and grass.

Pet Days – 1st & 2nd December
Thanks to everyone who supported this event by bringing along their much loved pets. Nice to see so many animals so well looked after in our community. A special thank you to Geoff, Kit, Richard and Karen McCrae who brought along their horse and pony and took every child for a ride. The students loved the experience.

Visit to Rangiwahia
Thank you to Jo, Yvonne, Nicki and Bruce who helped out with transport to this event today. A huge thank you to Rangiwahia School for inviting us over to share their dress rehearsal. We all know the benefits of having a live audience and we all learn from participating in this way. This was a great performance.

Oroua Jersey
The number 15 from our Oroua Rugby jerseys has not been returned as yet. Could we have it returned as soon as possible please.

Board of Trustee Meeting – 10th December.
The next Board of Trustee meeting will be Thursday night the 10th of December, starting at 7.00p.m in the staff room. All members of the public are most welcome to attend. Please find the agenda attached.

Board of Trustee Elections
These are to be held during May 2010. This is a good time to start thinking about the possibility of running for a position on the board or for who you would like to have representing you on the board. We would love to see you attend any or all of the board meetings held between now and then to find out how the meetings are run and what role board members play in the running of your school and your child’s education.
Election details will appear in newsletters throughout the early part of 2010.

Assembly
The last assembly for 2009 will be held on Tuesday the 15th of December starting at 2.00p.m. Everyone is most welcome to attend. Hope to see you then. A special visitor just might appear during assembly!

End of Year
We are sorry for any confusion caused concerning the last day of term. After several phone calls and emails to the Ministry of Education, we have finally finalised the last day of our school year date, which is Wednesday the 16th of December at 3.00p.m. The confusion was caused because the Ministry gave every primary school two days to develop and implement their new school curriculum. The Ministry requires that each school be open for instruction for 386 half days every year. Some schools take ‘teacher only’ days throughout the year meaning they must stay open later in December. At our school, we do not take ‘teacher only’ days as we are able to use other avenues e.g Brian Coles, relievers and our own time to fulfil ministry and school requirements. We will re-open for the 2010 school year on Friday the 5th of February at 9.00a.m.

As this is the last newsletter for 2009, we would like to thank everyone out there in our great community for all the support and help offered to us during this past very busy year as you help make this school such a great place to learn, teach and work in.
We would like to wish you all a very safe and happy Christmas, New Year period and we look forward to seeing you all back here safe and well for the 2010 school year.
Regards, Mary, Nicki, Mary B, Pat, and Christine.
